Mamma’s kitchen evokes memories of a magical haven. Sweet aromas floating down the hall, the blazing fire from the pizza oven and mamma herself catering to a table full of hungry patrons. Some are her close loved ones, and others may be friends, neighbours or even new visitors in town; as has always been the way at Mamma’s house. Everyone is welcome, and no one leaves unsatisfied.

These are the sentiments that fed Bishop Design by Paul Bishop’s inspiration for Fi’lia; the Italian offering set on the 70th floor of SLS Hotel & Residences. Operationally speaking, this was to be considered as the hotels all day dining venue, however it has been treated as a signature restaurant would.

Italy and the dining traditions of this beautiful culture were to be the foundations for the design, where both internal and external spaces were to be creatively considered. Sat in a prime location facing the world’s tallest building, this was to be a destination frequented by both residents and tourists. The design therefore had to accommodate for these high expectations and become a talking point across the city, where everyone would be queuing up for a seat at mamma’s table.

Nevertheless, there is a refinement that brings the venue together. Rose gold speaks volumes, and its beauty is instantly eye-catching. This finish encompasses the restaurants pizza ovens; a unique feature and playful link back to the female led-kitchen which is all open plan. Banquettes and seating arrangements are light grey, perfectly complementing the rose gold, and are situated on an island of linear patterned flooring which is surrounded by wooden panels. Natural greenery is introduced through vegetated forms which is coupled with the green velvet cushions that tease their grey counterparts. Up above the ceilings are stamp printed with subtle citrus references, never overly thematic but just the right amount of emphasis that guests can smile at the playful hint.

Italian tradition meets contemporary chic, where mamma is always there to greet you with open arms. Rustic refinement promises a pleasing sensory journey, accompanied by irresistible dishes lovingly prepared in the kitchen. Fi’lia is a place for residents and travellers to create their memories, just like families would around the table. A place filled with love, laughter and beauty.
