The Cuan has been a landmark in Strangford Village for over 200 years and when the current owners acquired it they wanted to put it firmly on the map again. The brief was to completely refurbish the Bar, Restaurant, common areas and 9 bedrooms and to transform the space into a cosy, inviting and welcoming haven for travellers and locals alike. They did however want it to have a well travelled and stylish look reflecting its owners and attracting a new and wider audience.

The bar was to be extended to allow drinks and dining, and the bar itself opened up to allow casual dining. The brief was to try and make all the small spaces a bit more open but also to have the flexibility to close areas for functions such as birthdays, wedding parties, private dining etc. There was also the requirement to upgrade the AV, and lighting for musical events. By opening up the whole space the designers were able to put in glazed double doors which would allow the main dining restaurant to be closed for functions but still allow a connection with the Bar and brasserie.

The owners were also keen to have an open kitchen which created atmosphere in the dining room and as this room was at the back of the Hotel they also wanted more light, so the designer put in a new roof light which allows light to flood in to the Restaurant and pull you through the building.

The style that the clients wanted was a touch of “Mayfair goes to the Seaside”, a smart and elegant feel but undeniably warm and inviting. The overall design works so well as it manages to balance being quite smart and elegant but also feels comfortable and casual, which in turn appeals to a wide clientele which is key. And the overall design is Classic and timeless and will never date.

The exterior of the Cuan has been transformed with dark ink painted facade, outdoor dining, heaters and a wonderful canopy that allows it to be used as much as possible. This beautifully lit building now greets you as you drive into the Village and is a truly welcome sight on the Green.
