Location: Los Angeles

Designer / Architect : CUAIK CDS

For this project, Cuaik CDS aimed to create an experience through Design, Architecture, Furniture and Art which aim to promote the Mexican gastronomic culture, design standards and quality. Alma is the first restaurant designed by Cuaik CDS in the United States which was all coordinated and executed remotely.

CUAIK CDS intended to create a popular destination to connect with LA’s community since Mexican Americans are the largest ethnic group in the city. They found their inspiration from the bustling city streets and coastal landscapes of both countries.

Neutral tones throughout the restaurant are contrasted with organic textures found in decorative details such as the restaurant’s custom woven mural, linen tablecloths and tropical clay-potted plants. The bar, which is wrapped in royal blue ceramic tiling, provides a vibrant focal point for the space. The airy patios on both levels are complete with umbrellas and retractable foyers to create a comfortable dining experience for locals and visitors all year round.

Applying the same concepts and materials, CUAIK CDS also designed the Alma chair; a piece of furniture adapted for this restaurant’s design. It uses beech wood, cardboard rope and a back handle made of “talavera”, as a reference to Mexican culture.

The fine-dining restaurant, located on the first floor, is designed as a reflection of it’s purpose, as it serves authentic Mexican cuisine with a Southern Californian twist. In other terms, CUAIK CDS wanted Alma restaurant’s design to embody the culture and traditions of both countries, which all together create a unique hospitality experience.
