The owners wished to develop a lifestyle hotel in downtown Phnom Penh, on a limited footprint with a 30 m. building height restriction and 260 rooms. Beyond the hotel component, the building needed to also offer retail spaces on the ground floor, mostly intended for third-party food & beverage venues. Car parking spaces were created, rare in this part of the city, which were provided to give the development a competitive advantage over other hotels in the areas.

The hotel rooms sizes needed to be kept at a minimum to maximize the total key count. Nonetheless, they still offered all amenities comparable to much larger hotel rooms. On the other hand, public spaces were to be kept generous to promote social interactions and support various activities throughout the day with an emphasis on flexibility. Particularly, the rooftop bar and restaurant was to be designed as a standalone venue – to be fun, unassuming and to cater to guests and locals alike.

With the Tribe brand being quite new at the time, many of the interior design features were invented which have now become part of the brand standards. The design is based on the legacy of Mr. Vann Molivann, a Khmer architect who spearheaded the country’s development in the 1960’s. Tribe Phnom Penh is located on the north side of the Mekong River and boasts spectacular views out onto the city.
