Bird Cage, the new bar and lounge at Hawaii’s exclusive luxury, adult-only resort, Hotel Wailea, offers a stunning view of Maui’s southern coastline. Designed by Philpotts Interiors, the aptly named space features large, custom-designed cage-like light fixtures and a handcrafted bar by Maui Custom Woodworks, creating a distinctive atmosphere.

Drawing inspiration from the glamour and style of New York City bars and restaurants, the lounge exudes timeless allure. Jewel-toned textiles, bold prints, and textures, alongside eclectic furnishings, contribute to its enchanting ambiance. The decadent space seamlessly blends luxury and tropical elements, boasting natural teak wood bar stools, opulent velvet and faux crocodile leather tufted sofas, black marble tables, and more.

Despite the fresh and whimsical vibe of the hotel and newly designed space, the design process faced significant challenges due to the pandemic. However, the project progressed under the leadership of McManus, who utilized the opportunity of an empty hotel to install new large slab granite flooring and make other upgrades.

A highlight of the project is the innovative open-air design, allowing guests to enjoy Maui’s natural beauty while experiencing a sophisticated dining atmosphere. The use of natural materials, such as locally sourced wood and stone, combined with abundant lush greenery, creates an inviting and immersive environment that captures the spirit of Hawaii.

This design thoughtfully integrates indoor and outdoor spaces, providing an unparalleled dining experience that leverages Maui’s stunning landscape. The strategic layout ensures optimal airflow and natural light, enhancing the overall ambiance. Attention to detail in the selection of materials and furnishings reflects local culture while ensuring durability and comfort, achieving a harmonious balance of aesthetics and functionality.
