Conran and Partners have once again demonstrated their expertise in luxury hotel design with the newly opened Park Hyatt Changsha. Set within a tower originally built as office space, this sophisticated project includes 230 guestrooms, a restaurant, a tearoom, a bar, a library, function rooms, and wellness facilities. Conran and Partners were responsible for the interior design, new cladding, and a canopy for the tower, as well as an elegant extension in the courtyard.

Building on their previous collaborations with Park Hyatt in Jakarta and Auckland, Conran and Partners aimed to create a unique ‘sense of place’ for Park Hyatt Changsha. The design reflects the city’s dynamic essence and celebrates the natural beauty of the Hunan region.

Guests are welcomed through a courtyard situated on the fourth-floor podium. Here, Conran and Partners established a clear boundary that marks the beginning of the Park Hyatt experience—a natural oasis in the heart of Changsha. This courtyard, developed in collaboration with landscape designers ADI, is tightly interwoven with the surrounding architecture.

As guests transition to the internal spaces, they are greeted by soaring ceilings magnified by linear slats and large-scale art installations. These grand spaces are sectioned into more intimate areas that lead to lifts and function rooms. On the 62nd floor, the communal spaces, designed as an enfilade of flexible rooms called ‘Lilan’, revolve around a central service area. The double-height check-in room features detailed timber paneling and a dramatic chandelier by Lasvit, inspired by local fireworks, alongside a woven metal paravent screen that reflects the city’s welcoming and celebratory nature. The communal spaces culminate on the 63rd floor with three large function rooms, evoking the ambiance of a grand residential penthouse, complemented by a Sky Kitchen that subtly mirrors Chinese joinery details.

The 48th floor houses a spacious wellness area, complete with a gym, wet spa, sauna, a 25-meter pool, and an intimate members’ lounge. Designed to evoke an immediate sense of calm, the wellness area uses a simple, natural palette to pay homage to the Hunan region’s beauty.

The guestrooms are designed as ultimate sanctuaries perched high above the city. Conran and Partners maintained a restrained palette with residential-inspired elements, including elegant green silk screens around the bed and custom-designed pendant lighting, contrasted by the bold colours of the furniture.

Through meticulous attention to detail and a profound understanding of luxury and local culture, Conran and Partners have crafted a hotel that is both a fashionable retreat and a celebration of Changsha’s vibrant spirit.
