Fusion Design & Architecture has completed the transformative redevelopment of the iconic Spier Hotel, delivering a contemporary interior that seamlessly blends heritage, sustainability and understated luxury. Tasked with reimagining the hotel’s public areas, Fusion Design & Architecture approached the project with a deep respect for the estate’s rich history, cultural roots, and regenerative ethos, crafting a guest experience that feels both elevated and grounded in place.

Located in the heart of Stellenbosch, the Spier Hotel holds a special connection to its surroundings. Fusion Design & Architecture responded by using a warm, earthy palette inspired by the region’s vineyards and gardens. Materials such as locally sourced timber, stone, handwoven textiles and custom glazed tiles create a tactile and inviting environment. The interiors celebrate South African craftsmanship through art and bespoke furnishings, contributing to a narrative of place and purpose.

Sustainability was embedded throughout the design, with upcycled furniture, energy-efficient materials and low-impact solutions used to reflect the Spier estate’s commitment to environmental responsibility. The overall atmosphere is natural and timeless, with a focus on textures and tones that echo the surrounding landscape.

One of the project’s highlights is the newly created roof terrace bar, which offers sweeping views of the Stellenbosch mountains and overlooks the serene pool area. This space exemplifies the project’s intent to blur the line between indoor and outdoor living, enhancing the connection to nature.

Fusion Design & Architecture has delivered an interior that is elegant yet approachable. By integrating local materials, respecting heritage, and embracing sustainable design principles, the studio has crafted a guest experience that feels authentic, luxurious and deeply tied to the spirit of the Spier estate.
