Studio Moren has completed Bertrand’s Townhouse, a 43 key boutique hotel formed from the careful integration of three Grade II listed Georgian townhouses in Bloomsbury. The project reflects a considered approach to adaptation, balancing the demands of hospitality with the preservation of the buildings’ original scale, proportion and domestic character.

Studio Moren approached the scheme by working with the existing fabric rather than imposing a conventional hotel layout. The organisation of rooms follows the natural structure of the townhouses, allowing the experience of the hotel to unfold through a series of spaces shaped by their proportions, light and position within the building. Guestrooms are integrated within this framework, with bespoke joinery and thoughtful spatial planning ensuring modern functionality without compromising clarity.

At the centre of the design, Studio Moren established a single, unified public space organised around a brass detailed bar. This room acts as a social anchor, supporting a range of uses throughout the day while maintaining the intimacy associated with a townhouse setting. The absence of subdivision allows activity to evolve naturally, reinforcing a sense of continuity.

Materiality plays a defining role throughout the project. Studio Moren developed a restrained palette of timber, brass and layered tones, enriched with accents of ochre and oxblood to create depth and cohesion. This interior language draws subtly on Bloomsbury’s cultural context, expressed through atmosphere rather than overt reference.

Interventions have been introduced selectively, including discreet rear extensions that support operational needs while remaining secondary to the original architecture. The result is a hotel that functions efficiently while retaining the character of a domestic residence, offering a cohesive and contextually grounded addition to Bloomsbury’s urban fabric.
