Originally constructed in 2003 as a rustic mountain lodge, the 70-key hotel located at the entrance to Zion National Park has been comprehensively transformed into a contemporary upscale retreat within the Tapestry Collection by Hilton. The redevelopment was led by DyeLot, which reimagined the previously disjointed collection of structures into a cohesive hospitality destination that reflects the dramatic character of the surrounding landscape while introducing a refined and modern design language.

The scope of work undertaken by DyeLot included the full renovation of guestrooms, public areas, and the restaurant, as well as the addition of a ballroom and fitness centre. From the outset, the design strategy was informed by the unique environmental conditions of Zion National Park. Landscaping and hardscaping were employed as natural wayfinding elements in place of exterior signage in order to preserve an uninterrupted arrival experience that maintains a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. Exterior lighting was carefully specified to comply with local dark sky regulations and to minimise disruption to regional wildlife.

The project presented several structural and logistical challenges due to the five-building configuration and previous expansions. Rather than removing existing load-bearing walls that conflicted with the new ballroom layout, the design team integrated them as architectural features, encasing salvaged timber elements in glass to create distinctive focal points within the lobby and restaurant. These timbers, originally recovered from the 1988 Yellowstone fire, contribute to the property’s narrative while reducing the need for new materials.

Inside, a rich yet restrained palette references the tones and textures of the surrounding terrain. Copper-patinated porcelain tiles, layered textiles, and warm wood accents establish a sophisticated atmosphere, while guestrooms incorporate subtle references to the region through spalted maple detailing and carefully curated artwork. The result is a contemporary hospitality environment that balances refined comfort with a deep sense of place.
