Alila Shanghai presents an urban oasis based on the concept of an “Urban Peach Blossom Shangri-La”, integrating traditional Chinese garden principles, Eastern art and the culture of Shanghai. The design by Horizontal Design London Ltd responds to the challenge of creating tranquillity within a dense metropolitan context, transforming a rooftop terrace into a calm resort environment in the centre of the city.

The entrance is intentionally hidden behind the building, guiding guests along a greenway that separates them from the surrounding urban activity. As visitors move along the path, the transition from bright light to dim illumination gradually prepares them for a quieter and more contemplative environment.

On the fourth floor, an inward courtyard interrupts the rhythm of the high rise structure. The layout is organised around four differently scaled “boxes” arranged around shallow water. Their dark tones create a subdued atmosphere that draws attention towards the light and reflections of the courtyard. A pavilion for reception appears to float on the water, forming part of the hotel’s distinctive check in experience. The restaurant Shining Court connects visually with the courtyard, while a private dining room sits above the water like a waterside pavilion. Additional spaces such as the study and living room are surrounded by grass and trees, offering places for reading and quiet reflection.

Two spatial systems organise the public areas. Organic combinations shape the courtyard spaces, while symmetry, rhythm and order define the Tea Banquet, the Multi Functional Library and the restaurant Weihai 500. Artworks inspired by nature, Eastern narratives and Shanghai’s regional culture further connect the architecture, landscape and interior experience.
