Tell us a little about your background in design:
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in architecture, which provided me with a strong foundation in spatial planning, materials, and structural aesthetics. My career began in commercial design in New Delhi, India where I spent three years working on large-scale commercial office projects for clients such as PWC and ZS Associates Since then, I have spent five years specialising in both residential and commercial interiors, joining Dapa Atelier in 2022, bringing a curated, client-focused approach to every project. My diverse experience has allowed me to work across multiple scales, from high-end residential homes to innovative commercial spaces, ensuring that each design is both beautiful and purpose driven.

How would you describe your personal design style?:
My design style is rooted in the juxtaposition of old and new. I enjoy blending historic architectural elements with modern, contemporary pieces to create spaces that feel layered, meaningful, and timeless. It’s about respecting the character of a space while introducing a fresh, refined perspective.

Where does your design inspiration come from?:
My inspiration is deeply influenced by location, history, and context. I never approach a project as an isolated interior; instead, I consider the building as a whole. I’m particularly interested in translating elements of the external architecture into the interior, ensuring a cohesive dialogue between inside and out. This approach helps create spaces that feel authentic, grounded, and connected to their surroundings.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?:
There is a growing emphasis on storytelling within design. Clients and designers alike are becoming more interested in the narrative behind each element—where materials come from, how they are made, and what they represent. Beyond individual pieces, there is also a stronger focus on the overall story an interior tells, making spaces feel more personal, intentional, and emotionally engaging.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future. :
• A renewed appreciation for handcrafted, artisanal elements – especially as AI and automation become more prevalent
• Designing with emotion in mind, incorporating pieces that spark joy through colour, texture, or pattern
• Authentic storytelling through materials and spatial composition
• Balancing technology with human touch to maintain warmth and individuality
• Creating spaces that are both functional and deeply personal

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?:
Don’t design purely based on trends. What matters most is creating a space that resonates with you and stands the test of time. Focus on what you genuinely love—pieces and materials that you can live with for years – rather than what is momentarily popular.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?:
The International Design & Architecture Awards are important because they recognise projects that combine creativity, precision and lasting impact. They celebrate interiors and architecture that inspire, set benchmarks for quality, and demonstrate how design can elevate everyday experiences. By highlighting innovative approaches from around the world, the Awards foster dialogue, encourage ambition, and showcase the highest standards of contemporary living on a global stage.

What projects are you currently working on?:
I am currently working on a series of penthouses in Canary Wharf, alongside residential amenity spaces, each designed to offer a refined and elevated living experience.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?:
A penthouse I previously designed within this development stands out as a favourite. It offered the opportunity to create something truly distinctive, pushing beyond conventional design approaches. The scale, views, and level of detail allowed for a highly curated scheme, making the entire process both creatively fulfilling and deeply rewarding.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?:
A penthouse I designed which had a lot of access panels, these elements needed to remain fully functional while being discreetly concealed through bespoke, removable features. Balancing practicality with aesthetics required a high level of precision, collaboration, and creative problem-solving to ensure the final result felt cohesive and refined.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing? E.g. Lighting companies, furniture companies:
Arte Wallcoverings are a staple in many of my designs – their collections offer exceptional texture, depth, and craftsmanship that elevate any space. I also find AI tools increasingly valuable, particularly for refining visuals and making quick design adjustments during the creative process.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?:
Over the next year, I would love to collaborate with a furniture designer to create a bespoke piece exclusively designed by Dapa Atelier, something that reflects our design ethos and adds a unique signature to our projects.

Your most treasured possession?:
My wedding jewellery passed down from my grandmother and mother, it’s a celebration of my Indian heritage and a symbol of love and tradition. One day, I hope to pass it on to my own children.

Your favourite holiday destination?:
The Maldives – an island escape where you can relax, eat great food, be by the water and switch off completely.

Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar?:
Hotel: Estelle Manor – on my list to stay this year; it’s incredibly romantic and beautifully designed.
Restaurant: Opheem, Birmingham – an exceptional dining experience with two Michelin stars.
Bar: Park Chinois, London – an unforgettable atmosphere with a real sense of occasion.

Your favourite book, film & song?:
Book: The Secret – this is one of the books my mom recommended to me, it’s all about manifestation and mindset.
Film: The Notebook – I am a hopeless romantic! No matter how many times I see it, it just never gets old. Who doesn’t want that over the top type of love?
Song: Dracula by Tame Impala – I’ve been listening to Tame Impala since University and every time I listen it takes me back to those days, and this new song is so catchy!

Your favourite food and drink?:
Food: I absolutely love Indian-fusion food, or Italian cuisine is a close second!
Drink: My favourite drink is a whiskey on the rocks – classic and full of character.

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?:
A relaxed walk in the sunshine with my husband, followed by a long lunch at a beautiful restaurant and a drink outdoors, simple but perfect.

If you weren’t in this sector, what would your alternative profession be?:
Anything creative – maybe a trend forecaster or a product designer where I could continue exploring ideas, materials, and innovation in a different way.

Anything else interesting?:
No one ever gets my name right; it’s quite the tongue twister! So over time, my nickname simply became “G” -short, simple, and easy to remember.
