Georgia Zikas

Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc) My undergraduate degree is in Communications from Suffolk University in Boston, MA. I later studied at the New York School of Interior Design in New York City.

How would you describe your personal design style? My personal style is rooted in the classics, but experimental with ancillary pieces.

Where does your design inspiration come from? Travel! Every time I take a trip (anywhere) I come back refreshed, inspired and influenced in one way or another.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense? I think people are gravitating towards quality, heirloom-like pieces that have longevity and can be enjoyed for years – less trend or disposable, more conscious on their long-term investments.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2023 and beyond. Art Influence, handmade pieces, Travel Inspired, Nature Inspired, Quality of Construction, Generational, multi-use spaces (offices that function as guest rooms, etc.)

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Invest in quality pieces, good quality never goes out of style.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards? Extremely important. It is such an honor to be recognized on a global stage and to be among such talented designers. Our team is so proud of what we achieve for our clients every day, how we make them feel, and how we enhance their lives through good design. To celebrate that honor globally is simply spectacular!

What projects are you currently working on? We have several new exciting projects in the works: a lake home in CT, a coastal home on Cape Cod, and a country home in Bucks County, PA.

What was your favourite project to work on and why? Recently, it was this project we are nominated for in Greenwich, CT!! Their travel influences informed the color palette (green temple door from Bali) and their extensive large-scale art collection that became the focal element, and inspiration. Soft textures and patterns sprinkled throughout enhanced and supported the saturated colors in the wall art.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why? All projects in 2020!! Really, the shift in clients’ heightened emotions were such an element to navigate, and the global supply chain issues delayed everything. I think we are all still recovering from the trauma of the pandemic – emotionally, and economically – our team continues to be sensitive to that with our clients.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing? We could not live without our trusted installers and our valued trade partners – their extra hands and attention are critical to a successful client experience.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? We are excited for the new projects we have committed to – but mostly the people who we have the pleasure of working with. It’s the clients who make a project! A beautiful room and home is a guarantee at this level, but it’s the experience along the way that makes a project truly a success.

Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself and your daily inspirations: Your most treasured possession?
My husband and our two little girls

Your favourite holiday destination? Maho Bay – Saint John USVI

Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar? Hotel – Chatham Bars Inn, MA
Restaurant & Bar – The Prince & The Pauper – Woodstock, VT

Your favourite book, film & song? Book – Atomic Habits by James Clear Film – The Pursuit of Happyness Song – By Your Side, by Sade

Your favourite food and drink? Favourite food, sushi – all of it! Favourite drink – spicy margarita

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon? Traveling to a new foreign place with my husband and two little girls, while shopping antiques and eating delicious food!

If you weren’t a designer, what would you be? A lion tamer! Just kidding. It would be easier than design!
I’d love to be a travel planner. I love giving people an amazing experience and I’d love being part of planning their most treasured memories.

Anything else interesting? I am truly passionate about my work and our clients. I find it all so rewarding! Being able to share photos of our work is even more exciting – otherwise it only stays as a memory. Our clients are also so proud to share their transformations. In many cases they are shy in the beginning, and then excited to share in the end. That says a lot. It’s the best reward.
