Bishop Design by Paul Bishop have been shortlisted for Lobby/Public Areas – Global Award in The International Hotel and Property Awards 2021.

SLS Hotels are renowned for breaking stereotypical moulds, in sophisticated fashion, and the Sky Lobby at the Dubai destination is no exception. Envisioned to stand as the main point of arrival for all guests as they check-in, it was paramount that the space epitomizes the spirit of the brand and sets the tone for the entire guest experience.

Found on the 71st floor of the 75-story hotel, the lobby was also to play host to a Caviar Bar and a cocktail lounge. The brief itself was to create a world of true luxury, something that would leave guests overwhelmed with awe. Exposed to Dubai’s glistening panorama of skyscrapers, it was essential that the design could give way to uninterrupted views across the entire space. Bishop Design by Paul Bishop were not to steal the spotlight of the surrounding city, but highlight and complement it through simplistic aesthetics. Naturally the location of the lobby should give way to feelings of excitement, glory, power and tranquility; life in the clouds.

The Sky Lobby captures the soul of the entire property. Staying true to the meaning of SLS; Style, Luxury Service which sweeps guests off their feet, allowing them to relax and indulge in a multitude of unique, intimate experiences. Thoughtful space planning has allowed the operator to provide services which exceed expectations of a traditional hotel lobby. From high-end dining at the Caviar Bar, aptly named 12 Chairs, given the seating offering it provides, to cocktail quenching at S Bar, the Sky Lobby will always remain memorable to all those that experience it.

The creative concept for the artworks and accessories is also a key element within, whereby Bishop Design by Paul Bishop became inspired by the story of Midas, infused with the SLS spirit and excessive glamour of Dubai. Theirs is a tale of the modern-day Midas in all of us and our pursuit for this excessive overdose of wealth. The legend of King Midas is one that warns of Avarice. The King was granted one wish and he wished to have anything he touched turn to gold. This narrative carries through to key elements within including the lobby carpet which is a representation of alchemy and turning elements into gold in line with the Midas Touch concept. The end result is an ethereal, abstract elegant design that retains an incredibly artistic feel.
