Thomas Mercer
Thomas Mercer has been shortlisted for the Bespoke Cabinetry/Installation Award in The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2023.
The word Armillae is the plural form of “armilla”, latin word meaning bracelet and deriving from “armus”, literally upper arm. More broadly it stands for armillary sphere, a model of objects on the celestial sphere, consisting of a spherical framework of rings, centered on the Sun and representing lines of celestial longitude and latitude and other astronomically important features, such as the ecliptic.
The distinctive feature of the Thomas Mercer Armillae is a clock mechanism featuring the model’s centre instead of the Sun or Moon planets typically found in traditional armillary spheres. The sphere can be either fixed or have its rings manually operated. The design idea was conceived by DKT Artworks, a company that has been at the forefront of bespoke fine art pieces for both residential and marine projects for over 40 years. Working with the broadest range of styles and materials, DKT Artworks provides original and innovative solutions for interior design, and this project is no exception.
Perfectly resonating with the design inspiration, the mechanism of the Armillae belongs to the exclusive family of astronomical movements, featuring a perpetual calendar which displays date of the month, month, leap year. It also indicates the equation of time, and other celestial coordinates such as the magnificent 3-D moon with moon age indicator. The mechanism is housed in a truly individual tube case made of extra-white crystal and offering an all-around view of the inner workings which can be admired in their entirety. The elegant open-work dial magnifies the intricacies of the multi-complicated movement and its stone settings pairs with the body. The hands are steel-made, hand-finished with blueing technique.
