Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)
I was born in Ankara/Turkey in 1986. I graduated from Bilkent University Industrial Engineering department in 2009, and continued my education with Interior Architecture in Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University and Sapienza University di Roma. I then designed for leading studios & firms. I have had active roles & responsibilities in various domestic and abroad projects; from design development of concepts to completion of building since 2010, and monitoring and maintaining the scope of projects in collaboration with associates and clients.
How would you describe your personal design style?
My approach to design is devoted to the promotion of pleasurable human & environment interaction. While providing comfort physically & psychologically, it also cooperates with the great engineering work. I found it similar to music composing, at one side the mathematics of design works fluently, on the other side using the instruments of design, you make a difference.
Where does your design inspiration come from?
My design inspiration mostly originates from the living styles of my clients. I search for the tips on their habits, the routines they enjoy. At some point I feel like a portrait photographer that sneaks into their daily life to capture moments. Moments that allow me to create a better potential for enjoyment of their environment.
In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
It gets smarter & allows uniqueness even more. Having easy access to a wide range of well-designed materials, products & technology supports us in creating projects that are very different from each other. It has become even more fun playground designers.
What are the key themes to consider when approaching design in 2022 and beyond?
With the effect of pandemic I presume, we are a little more focused on nature. Therefore, neutrals of the seasons, earthy & green tones seem to be included more in our works. Natural products with a strong statement will take their place such as marble. Curved forms and round details are more prominent. We may also see this effect within the works of leading product designers. Reflections in environment will also be available with various products such as glasses with textile, oxidised metals. It is going to be a year that we invite nature’s characteristics indoors.
If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?
Balance & integrity. No matter what your style of design is, we may say that these values are key to a successful design. It is significant to use a balanced visual language in bigger picture by blending functional and aesthetic elements in perfect harmony with contrast varieties.
What was your favourite project to work on and why?
It was a 50m sloop interior concept design in collaboration with Dykstra Naval Architects. It is always a pleasure to work with talented professionals on a structure that is well-thought-out & which has well-resolved volumes. Excites me still for future projects.
What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
The most challenging one among them was the refit project of sloop Delusha (ex Aphrodite A) where we had an excessive renewal scope strictly requested & a very narrow delivery duration. It was a great experience, I am still thankful to be able to work with talented craftsmen with unique skillsets and a hands-on project manager whom also is a good friend. With a clever planning strategy and know-how, miracles were created in fast pace.
Which products/services could you not live without when designing?
Among various instruments, lighting has a significant role in my projects. Besides supporting functionality & safety, with the utilisation of certain lighting tools & products it is possible to enrich the environment.
How important are The International Yacht & Aviation Awards?
The importance of The International Yacht & Aviation Awards lies in its effectiveness of bringing professionals together on a common platform and increasing the awareness of their work.
What projects are you currently working on?
I am currently working on 3 motor yacht refit projects, 50m Sands built by Benetti, 23.9m Mr.White built by Benetti Sail Division and 26.76m SL86 Cut built by Sanlorenzo.
What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
Expanding my network with talented professionals, artists & craftsmen. Exploring new materials & tools. Successfully completing my ongoing projects, start-up new exciting ones.
Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself and your daily inspirations:
Your most treasured possession? My experiences.
Your favourite holiday destination? Really depends on the motivation, Lake Como or Iceland for peace, Venice for creative purposes, Mediterrenian region for summer motivation.
Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar? Sky Lagoon Iceland, Pesca Amsterdam, Armani Hotel Milano; love the view of the bar.
Your favourite book, film & song? Difficult question, there is a pool of them. First ones that come to my mind; The Atlas of Misty Continents by İhsan Oktay Anar. Fantastic novel with improbabilities. The Tiger and Snow for film & Time is the Enemy by Quantic for a song I would say.
Your favourite food and drink? Sea food, or my own dishes. There is a quite talent in here! And wine.
Your favourite way to spend an afternoon? My favourite is to enjoy creative conversations.
If you weren’t a designer, what would you be? Being interested in well-being, I would say a healer of a kind most probably; could be an art therapist or psychologist.
