PLK Design have been shortlisted for Interior Design Award (Under 40 Metres) in  The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2023.

The Horizon FD103 ASKARI, is the first of Horizon’s newest FD100 models. While the yacht features a traditional layout on the main deck, with an expansive aft deck, a salon highlighted by full-height windows, and a formal dining area and galley forward, it is anything but traditional in its styling. ASKARI’s contemporary interiors reflect the owners’ desire to have a ‘Hayman Island’ relaxed and elegant beach house feel on the water.

Askari was designed as a floating beach house for the owners to explore the world in style and comfort and is unique in its focus on Australian designers. It is a shift from previous trends in formality of marine interiors. PLK Design has achieved a modern elegance with the interiors but retained the owners’ desire for a casual feel in one cohesive design. It reflects the informal lifestyle of Australians compared to their European counterparts, offering sophistication in addition to relaxation, where guests can feel comfortable either having breakfast in board shorts or dinner in a suit.

Beautiful, hard-wearing, and low-maintenance materials were used throughout to achieve a minimal-fuss sanctuary. The galley was designed with the owners’ love of cooking in mind, elongated with a central island to help segregate cooking zones. The Indigo-coloured lounge was finished with Westbury Textiles Toscana Indoor/Outdoor fabric to allow guests a seamless transfer from their water sports and to mask any paw prints from their two Mini Schnauzers. ‘Sunsets in Santorini’ inspired the skylounge, resulting in a neutral and tonal palette which pays homage to the incredible colours of the everchanging surrounding vistas. “Askari” translates to ‘soldier’ in Swahili as a nod to the owners’ family heritage, which was echoed in many of the feature fabric selections with African and tribal-inspired prints throughout the interiors and in some wallpaper accents.

PLK Design chose to focus on handcrafted furniture and lighting from iconic Australian designers for the interiors. Australian furniture maker Jardan supplied much of the furniture, from the dining table and chairs to the tub chairs in the salon, and the owner selected beautiful Cambria stonework as an upgrade throughout. The use of Australian designers continues in the lighting, with SØKTAS Hand Blown Glass Lighting in the salon as well as the wall lamps in the master stateroom. Horizon yachts are renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship in custom-built cabinetry, fine woodwork, and stonemasonry. Backed by hundreds of talented craftsmen, Horizon constructs virtually every detail in-house – from the interior layout and styling to the cut of stone used for the galley countertops and the cuts of leather used for the upholstery – all under a strict quality control system that ensures the finished product quality.
