Shortlisted: Hotel Design - Asia Pacific

The International Hotel & Property Awards 2026

Jouin Manku approached the renovation of the Park Hyatt Tokyo with extraordinary precision, carefully balancing preservation and evolution within one of the world’s most iconic hotels. Rather than introducing a new identity, the studio sought to honour the atmosphere, emotional resonance and quiet elegance that have defined the property since 1994, while adapting it to contemporary expectations of luxury hospitality.

Working within Kenzo Tange’s landmark Shinjuku Park Tower, Jouin Manku developed a design strategy rooted in restraint, where every intervention was calibrated to reveal and enhance the architecture’s existing qualities. Through refined materiality, softened geometries and carefully considered lighting, the renovation creates a greater sense of warmth, fluidity and comfort without disrupting the hotel’s timeless character.

A key focus was the reimagining of the Peak Lounge and Peak Bar. Preserving the central bamboo forest, regarded as the structural and emotional heart of the space, the studio introduced more open perspectives, generous seating arrangements and custom furnishings that encourage social interaction while strengthening the connection to Tokyo’s panoramic skyline. Warmer tones and softer lighting contribute to a more welcoming and vibrant atmosphere.

The guestrooms and suites received the most extensive transformation. Jouin Manku enhanced the natural flow of the existing layouts through softened corners, intuitive circulation and bespoke furnishings designed specifically for each space. Bathrooms were reinterpreted as generous wet rooms inspired by Japanese onsen culture, creating calm and restorative environments. Rich timber, veined marble, tactile fabrics and handcrafted details complete a design that feels both contemporary and deeply respectful of the hotel’s enduring legacy.
