Kate Nixon has completed a sophisticated lower ground floor renovation that transforms an underused area of a family home into a richly layered entertainment retreat designed for everyday living and effortless hosting. Tasked with creating a multifunctional space centred on social gatherings and relaxation, Kate Nixon developed a cohesive interior that balances luxury with comfort through refined materials and thoughtful spatial planning.

The International Design & Architecture Awards 2026
The brief called for a series of interconnected spaces that would support a variety of activities while maintaining a warm and inviting atmosphere. Kate Nixon responded by reimagining the layout to include a central bar, a climate controlled wine cellar, a cinema, a billiards and poker table, a golf simulator and a powder room. Each zone flows naturally into the next, while a custom banquet seating and dining nook provides an intimate setting for casual meals or game day gatherings.
At the heart of the design sits the bar area, conceived by Kate Nixon as the dramatic centrepiece of the space. Dark walnut panelling is paired with rich black marble featuring bold white veining across the countertops and backsplash. Brass shelving details and fixtures introduce a touch of glamour, while integrated lighting enhances the moody ambiance. Sleek black leather barstools with metal bases complete the polished composition.
Materiality plays a central role throughout the interior. Natural stone, custom timber joinery and layered textures in leather, brass and terrazzo create depth and visual richness. A palette of warm neutrals accented with burgundy and olive tones complements the timber detailing and enhances the relaxed yet refined mood.
The result is a versatile entertainment environment where quiet wine tastings, lively games of pool and relaxed movie nights can unfold within a unified and timeless design crafted by Kate Nixon.
