Lax Architects Pty Ltd reimagined Regaler within Melbourne’s historic Maltstore, a heritage-listed former brewery dating back to the 1880s. Defined by Romanesque red brick architecture, the project carefully balances the building’s industrial legacy with a refined and immersive hospitality experience. Working within strict heritage constraints, a tight structural grid and the challenge of integrating all external services internally, the studio transformed the existing shell into a layered environment that feels both authentic and contemporary.

The spatial experience is shaped as a journey of discovery. Guests move through a narrow, dark and textured passageway before arriving into an expansive interior that unfolds with cinematic impact. Throughout the venue, untreated brick walls and exposed services preserve the honesty of the building’s history, while calm and cohesive floor and wall finishes introduce balance and restraint. Brass-toned fittings and warm accents soften the industrial character and create a sense of sophistication.

Lighting plays a central role in establishing atmosphere and rhythm. Globe ceiling fixtures become sculptural elements, while candlelight and warm table lamps create intimacy and distinct micro-zones. Together, the layered lighting scheme enhances symmetry, continuity and comfort, encouraging guests to slow down and engage with the space.

Through adaptive reuse, Lax Architects Pty Ltd demonstrates how heritage interiors can be redefined into environments that are immersive, welcoming and emotionally engaging, while maintaining a strong connection to the architectural identity of the original structure.
