Shortlisted: Kitchen Design Over £150,000 Award

The International Design & Architecture Awards 2026

Ledbury Studio

Ledbury Studio has created an extraordinary bespoke kitchen that transforms craftsmanship and material innovation into the defining features of a remarkable family home. Designed as part of a dramatic open plan interior, the project responds to a client brief that called for an environment surpassing the comfort of any luxury hotel while remaining flexible, deeply personal and, above all, alive.

Ledbury Studio interpreted the concept of a living interior through the creation of a bespoke kitchen fabricated from solid panels of specially produced verdigris copper. Recognising the client’s admiration for the evolving character of copper, the studio developed a unique hand patinated finish that required many months of refinement before achieving the desired result. The finished surface provides both visual drama and the durability needed for everyday kitchen use.

Positioned beneath a soaring double height atrium filled with sculpture and artworks, the kitchen embraces a deliberately restrained design. With a commercial stainless steel kitchen concealed behind it, Ledbury Studio ensured the copper remained the unmistakable focal point. Extensive storage was carefully integrated beneath the staircase using plain painted cabinetry that complements rather than competes with the statement material. The result is a kitchen so sleek it reads as contemporary furniture, allowing it to blend effortlessly into the wider architectural setting.

The project also includes a beautifully crafted contemporary library, where Ledbury Studio designed custom bookcases, doors, fitted desks, a table and staircase clad in burr poplar. Created as both a shared home office and a relaxing retreat, the light filled space combines generous storage with areas for reading, working and leisure. Silk carpets and velvet curtains reinforce the home’s artistic character while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere.

Delivering the project demanded exceptional technical expertise. Fabricating the solid copper panels and achieving the precise verdigris finish proved particularly challenging during winter conditions, while the library required meticulous veneer book matching, specialist metalwork and carefully sourced solid burr walnut for the staircase. Through this remarkable combination of artistry and precision, Ledbury Studio has created interiors that feel timeless, luxurious and genuinely alive.
