Lupine has reimagined the renovation of a 1,185 sqm hotel lobby, transforming a space originally designed more than 25 years ago into a contemporary arrival experience that balances heritage, hospitality, and renewed vitality. The existing seven-metre-high lobby was characterised by illuminated glass floors, traditional Thai motifs, gold leaf detailing, carved floral timber panels, crystal chandeliers, and dark wood finishes, creating a theatrical yet increasingly dated environment.

Guided by a contemporary interpretation of the Thai lotus, Lupine developed a cohesive design language that subtly references an important cultural symbol. Rather than relying on overt ornamentation, the abstracted lotus motif is integrated throughout the interiors, informing sculpted wall treatments, bespoke joinery, custom furnishings, and finely crafted millwork. The motif also appears in unexpected locations, including the underside of the feature chandeliers, where it is revealed only from specific viewpoints. This restrained approach creates a sense of continuity while embedding Thai identity within the architecture itself.

Central to the design brief was the transformation of the lobby into a brighter and more dynamic social destination. A vibrant café and bar now activate the space throughout the day, replacing a previously underutilised open area that functioned primarily as a waiting zone. Strategic floor-level adjustments establish stronger spatial connections and draw attention to the hotel’s panoramic views.

The renovation preserves key architectural elements, including the existing staircase and reception framework, while introducing sculpted forms, refined materials, and a warmer atmosphere. Its success lies in thoughtful space planning, which breaks down the scale of the expansive volume into a series of interconnected zones. A clearly defined reception area, social bar, and sunken tea lounge collectively create a welcoming environment that encourages guests to linger, transforming the lobby from a transient thoroughfare into a vibrant hospitality destination.
