Atherton House

Atherton is a substantial family residence designed for a professional couple and their two teenage children, conceived as a place of comfort, amenity, and delight. Created by Mark English Architects, the project reflects a thoughtful response to both the clients’ international experience and their new chapter in California. Having previously designed homes in Singapore and Hong Kong, the clients brought a clear and informed brief, seeking a residence that would embrace its Californian context while supporting their evolving family dynamic.

The design is grounded in a strong cultural framework that honours Hawaiian values, traditions, and craftsmanship. Central to this approach is a deep respect for the land (“ʻāina”), with the residence thoughtfully oriented to optimise views, trade winds, and natural light while preserving key natural features. The spatial composition draws inspiration from traditional hale structures, with interconnected volumes that encourage airflow, flexibility, and a village-like arrangement. The concept of the lānai is elevated as a primary living space, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor environments for dining, relaxation, and social gathering.

The internal layout was developed in collaboration with a Feng Shui consultant, ensuring a harmonious flow of energy throughout. The central living area serves as the home’s focal point, animated by a sculptural staircase of steel and glass and an elevated bridge that links the two wings. These elements introduce a sense of movement and visual drama within the otherwise rational plan.

Materially and spatially refined, the residence balances geometric clarity with a sense of fluidity, ultimately delivering a sophisticated home that supports a relaxed, contemporary Californian lifestyle.
