Designed by Olson Kundig, One&Only Moonlight Basin Resort establishes a new benchmark for alpine hospitality in the United States, seamlessly integrating luxury accommodation with the dramatic natural landscape of Big Sky, Montana. Surrounded by the wilderness of the Custer Gallatin National Forest and framed by Lone Peak and the Spanish Peaks, the resort redefines luxury as an immersive connection to nature, where ski-in/ski-out access and year-round recreation foster a direct relationship with the surrounding environment.

As the first One&Only resort in the United States, the project translates the brand’s signature refinement into a rugged, high-altitude setting. Olson Kundig conceived the architecture as both a threshold and a starting point for outdoor adventure, carefully balancing immersion in the landscape with the comfort and protection expected of a world-class resort. Buildings are positioned to frame expansive views across forests and mountains while maintaining a low visual profile. Drawing inspiration from Montana’s agrarian vernacular, dark metal rooflines, timber cladding, and horizontal forms follow the contours of the land, allowing the architecture to recede naturally into the evergreen surroundings.

The resort is organised as a sequence of transitions between arrival and ascent, solitude and gathering, forest and open landscape. Distinctive elements include the Spa, anchored by substantial Moss Rock walls and an onsen inspired by alpine lakes, and the Moonshack, a characterful bar crafted from reclaimed barn wood and corrugated metal that reflects the region’s frontier heritage.

A carefully curated material palette of locally quarried stone, timber, weathering metals, plaster, oak, hemlock, and bronze references Montana’s natural and cultural history while ensuring long-term durability. Across its 92 guest accommodations, interiors frame spectacular mountain vistas, creating a hospitality experience deeply rooted in place, craftsmanship, and adventure.
