Muskoka Lakeside Property

Shortlisted: Interior Design Scheme - Canada Award

The International Design & Architecture Awards 2026

The interior design firm Opus 356 conceived a fully bespoke Muskoka retreat defined by handcrafted detail, natural materials, and immersive lake views, unifying architecture and interior design into a refined lakeside sanctuary. Spanning over 8,000 square feet, the residence is a complete expression of bespoke living, where every component—from architectural millwork to the smallest tactile finish—was designed and executed specifically for this home. The result is a deeply personal environment shaped by calm rhythm, sensory richness, and spatial clarity.

A guiding principle of the project is total customization, with continuous white oak millwork flowing through ceilings, walls, and built-in architectural forms. This unifying material language establishes cohesion while allowing each room to maintain its own identity within a larger spatial composition. Sculptural interventions, including curved millwork portals, integrated lighting reveals, and monolithic stone elements, are balanced with warmth and softness, reinforcing a dialogue between structure and comfort. Bespoke craftsmanship is evident throughout, from hand-stitched leather railings to a three-dimensional sculptural installation within the children’s playroom, conceived as an immersive artwork embedded directly into the architecture.

The material palette is deliberately restrained yet layered, combining honed stone, warm timber, hand-finished metals, and natural textiles. In the kitchen, a sculptural stone island anchors the space while custom cabinetry conceals functional elements with precision. In private areas such as the primary suite, softened lighting and tactile finishes create a cocooning sense of calm, while communal zones extend this language into spaces designed for gathering and daily ritual.

Expansive glazing dissolves the boundary between interior and landscape, framing forest, rock, and water as living compositions. Carefully controlled daylight enhances material expression, while integrated lighting highlights craftsmanship and detail. Across all spaces, Opus 356 establishes a refined balance between precision and softness, where architecture and atmosphere evolve throughout the day and seasons, reinforcing a cohesive, immersive, and enduring vision of Muskoka living defined by intention, restraint, and exceptional design discipline.
