Patrick Ahearn Architect draws on the traditions of classical New England vernacular architecture to create a timeless coastal residence at Slough Cove, located within the protected landscape of Edgartown’s Herring Creek Farm on Martha’s Vineyard. The practice responds to the exceptional setting, surrounded by rare sandplain grasslands and centuries of working agrarian fields, creating a home that feels intrinsically connected to its landscape and carries an implied sense of history.

The International Design & Architecture Awards 2026
The architectural composition takes inspiration from the grand estates of the Gilded Age, with traditional gambrel roof forms, a formal portico and a single-storey side entry that suggests an organic connection to a carriage house developed over time. A stepped-down cabana forms part of the aquatic programme, evoking the character of a former granary, while outdoor dining, sunbathing and gathering spaces extend the experience into the landscape. Cedar shingles, New England fieldstone and bluestone establish a sense of permanence, complemented by copper lanterns, shutters, dormers and window boxes.
Patrick Ahearn Architect creates a strong sense of symmetry across the central mass, where a pair of chimneys and gabled dormers provide a distinctive architectural anchor. Shed dormers bring natural light into the second floor of the side wings, while the broader arrangement reinforces the residence’s connection to traditional New England forms and proportions.
Inside, a double-height foyer clad in custom-milled panelling introduces formal living spaces that open onto rear terraces with west-facing views and spectacular nightly sunsets. A secondary spine connects the formal living and dining areas with informal family spaces and the carriage house wing, alongside a solarium and guest wing. Beyond the pool pavilion and cabana, preserved native vegetation forms a coastal buffer, strengthening the relationship between architecture and landscape.
