Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)

I am Mandy Ng, a British-trained architect with over 18 years of experience in interior design and operational management. I co-founded the Hong Kong office of Peter Silling & Associates, where I oversee both the studio’s operations and the execution of numerous hotel interior projects. My architectural background, combined with professional training in the UK, allows me to ensure that the architectural DNA is seamlessly integrated with our interior design concepts, maintaining a cohesive and innovative approach.

In addition to my management responsibilities, I play a pivotal role in shaping each project’s branding and design direction—from initial concept development to the selection of materials and finishes. I am committed to upholding the firm’s quality standards and paying meticulous attention to every detail to deliver exceptional results.

Throughout my career, I have developed a strong vision for blending architectural integrity with creative interior solutions, driven by my passion for design and dedication to excellence.

How would you describe your personal design style?

My personal design style can be described as a blend of modern and eclectic influences. I believe that each project is unique and should tell its own story, so I approach every brief with an open mind, tailoring the design to reflect the specific context and narrative required.

I place a strong emphasis on craftsmanship and the layering of details, creating spaces that curate meaningful moments for occupants. I aim for a design language that invites viewers to pause and appreciate the subtleties—whether through materiality, texture, or intricate finishes.

Ultimately, my style is about balancing contemporary aesthetics with curated details that evoke a sense of quality and thoughtfulness. I believe that a well-crafted space not only looks beautiful but also resonates emotionally with those who experience it.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

My design inspiration is deeply rooted in my personal experiences and global exposure. I enjoy traveling extensively, exploring different spaces, and immersing myself in diverse cultures. Visiting art museums around the world exposes me to a wide range of ideas, from the way different countries approach decoration to their craftsmanship and creative use of materials and techniques.

I also draw inspiration from the fashion industry, as I believe that luxury interior design should be an extension of a luxury lifestyle. Staying attuned to current color trends and evolving styles helps me understand the visions and aspirations of my clients.

Ultimately, my inspiration is a blend of cultural richness, artistic expression, and contemporary trends, all of which inform my approach to creating spaces that are both meaningful and aligned with the lifestyle and identity of those who inhabit them.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

Over the next twelve months, our primary aim is to expand our portfolio into different countries, allowing us to explore new markets and diversify our project experience. We also plan to venture into new design sectors, broadening our expertise and creative horizons. Strengthening relationships with our existing clients remains a priority, as we value their continued trust and look forward to delivering more innovative and tailored solutions for them.

Additionally, I am committed to fostering a stronger and more dynamic team. My goal is to lead and inspire my team to broaden their perspectives, embrace diverse design approaches, and push creative boundaries. By encouraging open-mindedness and collaboration, I believe we can elevate our design quality and continue to deliver exceptional, forward-thinking projects.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

In the context of hospitality design, I believe the industry is moving towards a stronger emphasis on local and regional influences. Authenticity and a sense of place are becoming central to creating memorable guest experiences. Future hotel designs will increasingly reflect the cultural, environmental, and architectural character of their surroundings, fostering a deeper connection between guests and the destination.

While innovative and conceptual ideas will continue to push the boundaries of design, the most meaningful and compelling hospitality spaces will seamlessly integrate these concepts with local craftsmanship, materials, and storytelling. This approach not only enriches the guest experience but also supports sustainability and cultural preservation.

Overall, the trend is towards more rooted, contextually sensitive designs that celebrate uniqueness and foster genuine connections between the space and its environment.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future.

1. Wellness: Prioritizing health, comfort, and mental well-being to create spaces that nurture and support users’ overall wellness.

2. Cultural Relevance: Ensuring designs are rooted in local context and cultural identity, fostering authenticity and meaningful connections to place.

3. Technology Integration: Leveraging advancements like smart materials and digital tools—such as LED art that can change scenes instantly—to create dynamic, adaptable environments.

4. Sustainability: Focusing on eco-friendly materials and practices to develop designs that are not only beautiful but also durable and environmentally responsible.

5. Timelessness: Striving for designs that remain relevant and functional over time, ensuring longevity and continued appeal for at least a decade or more.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?

My key piece of advice is to truly understand the client—listening to their needs, desires, and underlying vision. As designers, our role is to translate that vision into a coherent and meaningful space. However, it’s equally important to recognize that clients often have extensive wish lists. In such cases, guiding them to prioritize their needs and helping them shortlist their preferences is essential.

Effective communication and a clear understanding of what truly matters to the client ensure that the final design not only reflects their aspirations but is also practical and achievable. Ultimately, a successful design balances creativity with client needs, fostering a collaborative process that results in a space they will love and cherish.

They also provide valuable opportunities for networking and sharing best practices, ultimately elevating standards across the hospitality design sector. Your most treasured possession?

My most treasured ‘possession’ is the experience of working with clients from around the world. These diverse collaborations have enriched my perspective, deepened my understanding of different cultures, and allowed me to develop a flexible and innovative approach to design. Each project and client has contributed uniquely to my growth, making this global experience my most valued asset both personally and professionally.

What projects are you currently working on?

Currently, our firm is engaged in a diverse range of projects across various sectors. We are working on a luxury spa project that emphasizes relaxation and wellness through thoughtful design and premium materials. Additionally, we are designing VIP boxes and lounge areas for an arena, with a focus on creating exclusive, luxurious spaces that combine comfort and striking aesthetics, enhancing the overall guest experience and elevating the venue’s prestige.

This year, we also began collaborating with a lifestyle brand on several F&B projects in Singapore, aiming to craft vibrant and inviting dining environments. Of course, we continue to build on our expertise in luxury hospitality, with ongoing renovations of hotel rooms and suites that prioritize comfort, elegance, and meticulous attention to detail.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?

My favorite project to work on was the Marina Bay Sands Guestroom Renovation in Singapore. What made this project particularly rewarding was its complexity and the challenges it presented. Due to the building’s unique architecture, we faced significant difficulties in creating a completely different spatial arrangement for the rooms.

It was an intricate puzzle that required innovative solutions and meticulous coordination. Despite the obstacles, including working during the pandemic with only online communication and correspondence, the collaboration between the consultants, the client, and the contractors was exceptional. The client’s clear vision and understanding of what they expected played a crucial role in guiding the project and making it successful.

Together, we managed to complete the project from space planning to design and construction, turning a challenging concept into a reality. This project exemplified teamwork, resilience, and creativity—all of which made it incredibly fulfilling and memorable.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?

The Residence II project was one of the most challenging yet rewarding projects I’ve worked on. The task was to design a single space that would embody multiple distinct themes, each representing different facets of London’s rich culture and history, while maintaining a cohesive and luxurious overall aesthetic.

Inspired by the concept of a British private club, the design spans five salons, each telling a unique story of London’s elegance, creativity, and societal heritage. From the bespoke craftsmanship of Savile Row to the vibrant markets of Leadenhall, the playful leisure of the Games Room, the avant-garde spirit of the Fashion Room, and the nostalgic exploration of the Map Room, each zone required a tailored approach to both style and ambiance.

The challenge lay in integrating these diverse styles seamlessly—crafting spaces that are visually distinct yet interconnected. This involved intricate detailing, innovative spatial zoning, and creative use of narrative-driven design elements. As each salon reflects a different aspect of London’s identity, creating harmony while respecting their individuality tested our team’s creativity and coordination.

Ultimately, the project was a journey of balancing storytelling with luxury, craftsmanship with comfort, and tradition with modernity—making it one of the most fulfilling projects I’ve had the privilege to work on.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing? E.g. Lighting companies, furniture companies

For me, research is the most essential ‘product’ in the design process. The extensive array of materials and resources available online allows myself and my team to explore and identify the right materials that align perfectly with the design brief. Access to detailed product information, samples, and industry insights helps us make informed decisions, ensuring that the finishes, furnishings, and materials not only meet aesthetic standards but also deliver in terms of quality and functionality.

Additionally, maintaining strong relationships and open dialogue with suppliers is crucial, as they often assist us in customizing materials and finishes to better match our design vision. Their expertise and flexibility enable us to push creative boundaries and achieve unique, tailored results that elevate the overall project.

My favorite holiday destination is Japan. The country offers a rich tapestry of cultural sites and experiences that are both inspiring and deeply meaningful. Japan’s blend of tradition and innovation provides a unique atmosphere—where ancient customs coexist with cutting-edge technology and design. Visiting Japan not only allows me to immerse myself in its cultural heritage but also sparks new ideas and perspectives that influence my approach to design and creativity.

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?

My favorite way to spend an afternoon is finding a quiet corner in a cozy coffee shop and immersing myself in a good book. It’s a simple pleasure that allows me to unwind, reflect, and recharge while enjoying a warm beverage and a peaceful atmosphere.

If you weren’t in this sector, what would your alternative profession be?

If I weren’t in the interior design sector, I would love to be a furniture maker. I have a passion for crafting beautiful, functional furnishings that not only enhance spaces but also bring joy to those who use them. I deeply treasure the natural beauty of materials, and I would enjoy creating pieces that highlight their authenticity and craftsmanship. The opportunity to design and build furniture that celebrates the inherent qualities of materials, while blending artistry and practicality, would be incredibly fulfilling, allowing me to contribute to people’s everyday lives in a meaningful way.

Anything else interesting?

I studied art before becoming a designer, and if I were not in this profession, I would love to be a painter. Using my skills and imagination to create visual artworks allows me to explore my creativity in a different form. Painting offers a unique outlet for self-expression and conceptualization, and I find that it continually enriches my perspective and approach to design.
