Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)

Architect and founding partner of the studio 3LHD studio since 1994. During my career, I have led many award-winning projects of various typologies: public, cultural, residential, sports and mixed-use. In addition to my practice, I have been teaching architecture for 25 years at various schools and universities.
My studio intensively develops the integration of different disciplines; architecture, urban and landscape, design, art, and explores new possibilities of interaction between architecture, society and individuals. 3LHD has developed work methodologies in which the architectural office is primarily a platform for the coordinated production and exchange of ideas and knowledge.

How would you describe your personal design style?

My “style” is the philosophy of my office’s work. Collaborative practice, team-oriented and organized. Each project is different every time, with various realities and numerous parameters that we set and are given to us. It is based on the exchange of opinions from different people,

Where does your design inspiration come from?

Inspiration comes from the world around us. Almost from every creative discipline and people. Art, literature, film, design, fashion, product design, auto industry… And each project is informed and inspired by the location, historical context, program, people…

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

In what direction do you think design in general is moving? I hope in the direction of respect for and towards man and nature and our planet around us.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future.

Build less, use existing objects and structures, adapt and transform more, Sensitivity to the environment and nature around us, Collaboration with related and creative professions, Use and control technology to serve us, Build for people

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?

“He who seeks a goal will remain empty when he reaches it, but he who finds a path will always carry the goal within himself.” Nejc Zaplotnik

How important are The International Hotel & Property Awards?

It is always important for us to create good architecture, of any typology, from the basic idea to realization. Architecture that has quality and durability in every detail.
Since a significant part of our portfolio is related to hotels and hospitality, of course it is important to get international recognition.

What projects are you currently working on?

In Croatia we are working on many projects. There are currently several projects in progress, at the construction site stage; Hotel Marjan in Split, Hotel Argentina in Dubrovnik, Bus Terminal in Rijeka, Elementary school in Rijeka. In Italy, Grignano Waterfront near Trieste.
We are working on the development of several residential projects in Zagreb and Rijeka.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?

It is not possible to answer that question unambiguously, since we have worked on 350 projects in 30+ years of our practice. And all projects are different and specific, and that’s how we conceive them from initial idea to realization. To mention few, initial projects like the Memorial Bridge in Rijeka and a small sports hall in Bale and the renovation of the Dance Center in Zagreb, our first hotel Lone in Rovinj, residential complexes like Park K etc.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?

The answer is almost the same as the answer to the previous question. The challenges of each project are specific, for some it is a sensitive situation in the city, a historical matrix, demanding urban conditions sometimes in a natural protected environment, then there are also technically demanding constructions, materials, etc.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing? E.g. Lighting companies, furniture companies

Our office has been a collaborative practice from the beginning, team-oriented and organized. Each of our projects, from the very beginning to the end, is organized and implemented in a way that serves the team and the project. From the very beginning, we include various collaborators, engineers and designers of all kinds and other various consultants, specialists in certain fields, and they inform us and thus direct the idea and its realization.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

As in the past 30+ years, to lead all current projects to successful completion and to work on new projects that are now on the table, and progress in every aspect of our practice
