Tell us a little about your background in design:
I’ve been immersed in the world of design for as long as I can remember. Even as a child, I was drawn to the emotion and intention behind beautifully crafted spaces. But my journey into interior design took on a deeper purpose years later, after the heartbreaking passing of my son. In the midst of unimaginable grief, I made the decision to pursue a career that brought me joy, healing, and renewed meaning. That choice ultimately led me to earn my BFA in Interior Design from the International Academy of Design & Technology—an education that grounded me in the technical and creative principles that define my work today.
I’m the CEO and Principal Designer of CCS Interior Design Group, a Chicago-based firm I founded in 2008. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of designing luxury homes, boutique commercial spaces, and global vacation properties, blending modern sensibilities with curated, intentional storytelling. My design philosophy marries expressive maximalism with refined minimalism, creating interiors that feel elevated, inviting, and deeply personal. To me, true luxury is rooted in emotion. Beauty with purpose, craftsmanship with heart, and spaces that meaningfully support the lives lived within them.
Leadership has played a meaningful role in my career. I made history as the first African American President of the ASID Illinois Chapter, an experience that strengthened my dedication to representation, mentorship, and expanding opportunities within the design community. I’m also a sought-after speaker for national design events, and I proudly serve as a Brand Ambassador for The Merchandise Mart, representing some of the industry’s most respected luxury brands.
My work and influence have been featured in several respected publications and platforms, including CS Magazine, Modern Luxury Magazine, Luxe Interiors + Design, AD Pro, and Design Chicago, to name a few. Each feature reflects the intention, passion, and precision I bring to every project. I’ve also received several industry recognitions, to name a few: the ASID Illinois Member of Distinction Award and an ASID Design Excellence Award for Outdoor Space—acknowledgments that affirm my commitment to excellence and innovation.
Giving back is central to who I am. I’ve volunteered my services to organizations such as Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA) and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, using the power of design to inspire hope, comfort, and joy. I continue to mentor emerging designers and remain actively engaged in community-focused leadership, helping others rise and find confidence in their creative paths.
Outside of my work, I am a proud wife, mother, and grandmother. My son’s memory remains a guiding light in my journey, fueling my resilience, courage, and passion for living boldly. I also love motorcycle riding and traveling, both of which inspire my creativity and broaden my artistic perspective.
Design is not only my profession, it’s my healing, my joy, and the legacy I’m building. Through CCS Interior Design Group, I strive to create spaces that elevate, restore, and tell meaningful stories, one beautifully curated environment at a time.
How would you describe your personal design style?:
My personal design style is a refined blend of modern sophistication with a curated mix of maximalist expression and minimalist restraint. I love creating spaces that feel elevated, intentional, and deeply personal, where every detail has purpose and every selection contributes to a cohesive story. For me, design is not about filling a room with beautiful objects; it is about curating an experience that reflects the client’s identity, lifestyle, and aspirations with clarity and meaning.
At the heart of my style is a modern foundation that brings a sense of balance, simplicity, and timeless structure. I gravitate toward sculptural silhouettes, refined lines, and architectural clarity that set a strong visual base for everything that follows. That modern foundation becomes the canvas for layered richness, depth, and personality. Elements that bring character and warmth into the space.
The maximalist side of my approach shows up in bold, expressive details: art that sparks emotion, textures that invite touch, patterns that tell a story, and curated accents that add individuality. These are carefully chosen focal points designed to heighten the emotional impact of a room without overwhelming it. Maximalism, when done with restraint, adds vibrancy and creates memorable moments.
Equally important is the minimalist restraint that anchors every design. I believe true luxury requires space to breathe, clean edges, thoughtful editing, and balanced compositions that allow a room to feel serene and harmonious. Minimalism ensures that each element has room to shine and that the overall environment feels calm, intentional, and beautifully refined.
The magic happens in the interplay between these two energies. The drama and personality of maximalism are grounded in the tranquility and structure of minimalism. The refined lines of modern design are softened by layers of warmth, texture, and materiality. This creates interiors that are expressive yet timeless, bold yet livable, luxurious yet welcoming.
Texture is one of my signature tools. I love pairing contrasting materials such as stone with metal, velvet with linen, and leather with wood to create depth and invitation. These combinations add dimension and create a tactile richness that elevates the entire experience of the space.
Color also plays a pivotal role. Whether I’m embracing bold hues or whisper-soft neutrals, I approach color with intention. It guides the mood, highlights architectural features, and adds character without overwhelming the design.
Ultimately, my personal design style is about creating spaces that feel curated, meaningful, and deeply connected to the people who inhabit them. My goal is always the same: to craft environments that balance beauty and functionality while telling a story that feels authentic, elevated, and profoundly personal.
I gravitate toward clean architectural lines, rich textures, layered materials, and bold moments that add personality without overwhelming the space. For me, it is all about balance: warmth and elegance, simplicity and impact, form and function.
Ultimately, my style is rooted in creating environments that feel lived-in yet luxurious, spaces that are not only beautiful but also meaningful, comforting, and reflective of the people who call them home.
Where does your design inspiration come from?:
My design inspiration comes from the world around me and the experiences that have shaped my life over the years. I have always believed that inspiration is not something you search for but something you live with, something that reveals itself through travel, culture, emotion, and the quiet moments that leave an imprint on your spirit. Every chapter of my journey influences the way I approach a space and the story I want that space to tell.
Travel is one of the greatest sources of inspiration in my life. Whether I am exploring the vibrant colors of the Caribbean, walking through historic European streets, or experiencing modern architecture in busy cities, each destination leaves its own mark on my creative perspective. I draw from the textures of local craftsmanship, the harmony of natural landscapes, and the rhythm of cultural expression. Travel expands my understanding of scale, form, and materiality, and it inspires me to bring global influences into my work in a way that feels refined, sophisticated, and deeply intentional.
Fashion also fuels my creativity. I am inspired by the structure of couture tailoring, the artistry behind fabric manipulation, and the confident way designers merge boldness with elegance. Fashion teaches me how to balance drama with restraint and how to use color, texture, and silhouette to create emotional impact. It reminds me that a space, much like a garment, should have movement, personality, and presence.
Nature plays an essential role in my inspiration as well. The softness of morning light, the movement of water, the natural patterns found in stone and wood, these details anchor my work in authenticity. Nature teaches me balance and harmony and encourages me to design environments that feel restorative, connected, and beautifully layered.
Some of my greatest inspiration comes from quiet, everyday moments. The curve of a sculptural chair, the craftsmanship of a handmade object, the feeling of a thoughtfully balanced room, these experiences remind me to slow down, to appreciate subtlety, and to design with intention rather than excess.
My personal journey also deeply shapes my creative voice. The challenges I have overcome, the strength I have gained, and the joy I have chosen to pursue all influence the emotional foundation of my work. Losing my son changed my life and reminded me to follow what brings meaning, purpose, and healing into my world. Interior design became the path that restored me and allowed me to create beauty for others. That experience taught me to design with empathy, sensitivity, and a profound respect for the people who will call these spaces home.
Ultimately, my inspiration comes from crafting environments that honor people and their stories, elevate their daily experience, and reflect their truest sense of self. Every project is an opportunity to create something meaningful, spaces that feel intentional, authentic, and deeply personal.
