Tell us a little about your background in design:

Heather Bernstein, owner of HKB Interior Design, is a master interior designer with almost two decades of experience in the industry. Heather’s bubbly yet professional personality leaves its mark on every home she touches with her personalized, warm approach to interiors. Heather’s love for beautiful spaces originated from her time spent absorbing her mother’s skill in interior design and running her independent firm. After graduating college, Heather moved to Thailand to teach English which expanded her senses and empathy for other cultures that commonly shows in her designs. Soon after, Heather accepted a corporate position for a Fortune 500 leading specialty retailer of high-quality products. This experience not only enhances her passion for design but can also be attributed to her well-rounded creativity and organizational skills that now come as second nature.

How would you describe your personal design style?
My personal design style is like a warm hug. I want anyone who enters the space to feel at ease, happy and in awe.

Where does your design inspiration come from?
I find inspiration all around me and inside me. From nature, to being with my family to turning inwards with yoga. If we are open to inspiration it is all around us.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

I think AI is going to shake up design, but I am just not sure how. I also think that we are going to be sourcing more and more vintage and antique pieces to go green!

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future.
Mixing styles of the architecture with the furnishings
Undesigned design
Managing client expectations of the process
Sourcing used (vintage & antique pieces)

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?
The most important thing is to listen to your client. If you can hear them it helps build trust early making for a smoother design path. The other thing that is important is listening to your gut.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?
The International Design & Architecture Awards is such a prestigious award. It would be a true honor.

What projects are you currently working on?
We currently are engrossed in what I like to call our bread & butter (full construction and furnishings projects). We love soup to nuts projects where our full vision can come to life.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?
I would have to say this project (Good As Gold) since it was for our Brady Bunch blended family. I got to work with my ‘new’ husband and we loved working together.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?
The likes of Lostine and Nickey Kehoe add charm and a comfort to any project.

Final Thoughts, Tell us a little about yourself:
