Tell us a little about your background in design:
I have essentially had two twenty year careers in food and interiors styling and writing including a fifteen year tenure as House and Interiors Editor at Australian House & Garden magazine alongside opening my homewares store in 2007 selling Italian artisan linens from eight-generation fabric house Busatti. Our offering of products and services have grown with our team to include styling, made to measure soft furnishings, decorating and interior design for full renovations and new builds.

How would you describe your personal design style?
I have always been obsessed with creating ‘Nancy Meyers’ inspired homes with cosy and comfortable interiors, great art and generous kitchens filled with food, family and friends. I strive to design spaces and pieces which are classic and comfortable, polished and practical – equally at ease with elegant entertaining and everyday family life. I love a layered, earthy palette which is warm and inviting, and find joy in the detail. I’m always striving to capture that ‘new spirit, old soul’ feeling you find in the very best of interiors and I believe that life’s simple pleasures – a steaming cup of coffee, fresh flowers in a vase, crisp sheets on a well-made bed – with care and attention can be experienced every day.

Where does your design inspiration come from?
I am personally drawn to the scale and sensibility of American furnishings and interiors (cue Nancy Meyers!) and the craftsmanship and patina of European design. I love a good high/low, Zara/Prada approach to budgets and describe our interiors as the bespoke ‘Haute Couture’ to our ‘Ready to Wear’ product collections. I have always loved the idea of a one-of-a-kind store and the discoveries within it, of creating a world for people to explore and experience an inspirational way of life. I am essentially a shopkeeper and a homemaker, passionate about interiors and their ability to create everyday joy.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
I feel the design industry is applying more comprehensive sustainability standards with a growing emphasis on the circular economy and social challenges such as affordable housing. There is an increasing awareness of the economic and social value of design within broader decision-making frameworks and AI is breaking new ground in technology integration, reshaping software, processes, products and experiences to better integrate our built and natural environments.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future.
Multi-generation living. Family homes need to adapt with flexible, mixed-use spaces simultaneously delivering independence and connection.

Sustainability. Be it the material, the practice or the approach to invest in minimising impact through design choices.
Technology. Being educated and open to evolving technologies to deliver better outcomes for everyday living.

Provenance. The beauty of design lies in the story of its origin, its maker, the creative process and its reason for being – history carried forward creates context and a meaningful future.

Joy. Good design brings comfort and sparks joy. Small luxuries, with care and attention, can be experienced every day.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?
Find what you love and make it your own. We usually know what we don’t like and can take more time to discover what we do, but I find there are usually a few pieces or ideas which we are instantly drawn to. Use these as your foundation to create a cohesive design that reflects the people who call it home.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?
The IDAA awards offer both local nuance and international perspective reviewing industry peers and projects across multiple design fields, influences and geographic regions on a truly global scale.

What projects are you currently working on?
We are currently working on a contemporary new-build residence in the Tasmanian wilderness as well as a number of private residences in Perth, Canberra, Sydney and regional Australia. One current project will be the fourth residence we have worked on with the same clients which is a very special privilege.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?
Our beautiful new studio would be my current favourite project, completed at the end of last year. The opportunity to design our own space was led by the practicalities of our day-to-day and the need for each space to multitask. Favourite materials, design details, suppliers and trades collaborated to create an inspiring home for our team and showcase for our clients. I smile each time I walk through the door. It feels warm and cosy and light and lovely, filled with the pieces and people I cherish.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
The period during Covid and immediately after presented unique challenges with reduced workforces and pressure on supply chains. We were fortunate to have clients who understood the struggles and trades who problem solved with us to adapt and deliver despite the difficulties faced.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?:
We work with deeply talented trades, artisans, makers and suppliers and we are the sum of our parts. Some of our preferred suppliers include Boyd Blue, Quercus & Co, Boucher & Co, Fanuli, iBuild, Kreative Kitchens, Sydney Tap and Bathroomware, Granite & Marbleworks, Eco Outdoor, Enoak, Tongue & Groove, Aeria Country Flooring, Onsite, Winning Appliances, The English Tapware Co, Keeler Hardware, Premier Carpets, Est Living, Gineico, The Heater Man and The Vault.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
We are on a mission to become a global lifestyle brand synonymous with everyday joy. Our vision is to create carefully considered places and products with trusted partners which are beautiful and functional and bring joy. Last year we launched wallpaper and fabric with Quercus and Co and this year our furniture collection with BOYD Blue which has been three years in the making. We have exclusive new accessories, custom soft furnishings and styling services now available through our Rushcutters Bay store and exceptional studio client projects and product collaborations in the making which we are all so incredibly proud of.

Your most treasured possession?
My family. My husband Tim taught me to fly 25 years ago (literally, he’s a pilot and was my flying instructor) and our beautiful kids Henry (10yrs) and Agnes (7yrs) are the light of our lives.

Your favourite holiday destination?
For many years I had annual buying trips to the Busatti fabric mill in Anghiari, Italy. It is a tiny, ancient village perched on a rolling Tuscan hill overlooking Leonardo da Vinci’s infamous plains of the Battle of Anghiari (1505). I grew up with the sons of the family’s eighth generation and their children are the same age as mine. I have picked olives on their farm, sampled the oil from their harvest and eaten the most wonderful meals at their kitchen table. They possess a spirit of generosity and warmth and a deep love of craftsmanship, heritage and family which has left an indelible mark on my heart and infused my fondest travel memories with dreams of la dolce vita.

Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar?
Favourite hotel – I had the great privilege of staying at Soneva Fushi with my family for my 40th birthday. It is an idyllic ‘No News, No Shoes’ island hideaway which exceeded every expectation.

Favourite restaurant – We loved Bei Amici in Sydney’s Darling Point for the longest time. I celebrated my 30th birthday there and Felix and Leigh catered Tim’s 40th birthday at our home. We shared client and family dinners there alike and are still grieving their move back to Switzerland this year! Sean’s Panorama on Bondi Beach is always beautiful, warm and inviting with its ocean views, homestyle food, eclectic art and polished neighbourly service. 4

Favourite bar – 10 William Street, Paddington. A sophisticated hole in the wall where I have shared many treasured midweek meals with friends.

Your favourite book, film & song?
Favourite book – The Slight Edge by Jeff Olsen. An eloquent explanation of the power of compounding small decisions to effect substantial change.
Favourite film – Anything by Nancy Meyers. The homes, the art, the fashion, the music – I love them all.
Favourite song – Frank, Dean, Bing, Nat. I love all the classic crooners.

Your favourite food and drink?
Favourite food – Pasta and pastry. Any which way.
Favourite drink – Full cream flat white in the morning, gin and tonic with plenty of ice and cucumber or fresh rosemary in the afternoon. And a good buttery chardonnay always.

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?
Cooking in my kitchen for family and friends.

If you weren’t in this sector, what would you alternative profession be?
Obstetrics. It was my fork in the road after school – move to Melbourne and study medicine or stay in Queensland to work at Mother Meg’s which led to food styling, writing and eventually interiors. I think I would have made a lovely, calm obstetrician and I did get the grades though I was mostly inspired by the effervescent Dr. Megan Eisenberg from Nancy Meyer’s Father of the Bride II.
