Tell us a little about your background in design:
From an early age, Kimberly Parker was sketching dream homes—a passion that led her to study civil engineering and construction management at Brigham Young University before earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design in 1998. Her technical foundation provides a rare depth of understanding in architecture and construction, distinguishing her within the design industry.

How would you describe your personal design style?:
Kimberly Parker Design creates refined mountain homes that balance architectural discipline with warm, livable luxury. The firm is known for deeply thoughtful interiors that are timeless, highly functional, and carefully detailed, from cabinetry and lighting plans to the final furnishings. Their style blends clean lines, natural materials, and elevated comfort, resulting in homes that feel sophisticated yet inviting, never overdesigned, always intentional.

Where does your design inspiration come from?:
My design inspiration is rooted first in the mountains where I live and work. The landscapes of the Mountain West shape how I think about materials, light, and longevity. Stone, wood, metal, and texture are not just aesthetic choices here, they are practical responses to climate, elevation, and the rhythm of mountain living. The homes we design must feel grounded in their surroundings, able to withstand heavy snow, bright sun, and daily life with family and guests. The mountains constantly remind me that beauty and durability should work together, and that luxury should feel comfortable, authentic, and deeply livable.

Travel has also been one of my greatest teachers. Experiencing architecture, craftsmanship, and cultural traditions around the world expands my perspective and sharpens my eye. Whether it is the patina of aged materials in Europe, the quiet restraint of Asian design, or the layered textures found in historic cities, travel reinforces the importance of authenticity and storytelling in a home. I pay close attention to how spaces make people feel, how materials age over time, and how thoughtful details elevate everyday living. Those lessons often show up in subtle ways, through proportion, material selection, or a unique element that gives a home its own sense of history and character.

At the same time, I draw continual inspiration from the energy and sophistication of New York and Los Angeles. These cities push design forward. They introduce new ideas, fresh palettes, and a level of refinement that keeps my work current and evolving. New York influences my appreciation for tailored, architectural interiors and efficient use of space, while Los Angeles brings a sense of relaxed luxury, indoor-outdoor living, and a modern approach to comfort. Together, they help balance the rustic beauty of the mountains with a more polished, contemporary edge.

Ultimately, my design inspiration comes from the intersection of these influences, the strength and authenticity of the mountains, the perspective gained through world travel, and the innovation found in leading design cities. That combination allows us to create homes that feel timeless, sophisticated, and uniquely connected to both place and people.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?:
Design is moving toward a more intelligent, data-informed future where creativity is amplified by AI rather than replaced by it. Artificial intelligence is helping designers explore ideas faster, visualize concepts more clearly, and make smarter decisions about materials, performance, and functionality early in the process. It allows for greater precision, better coordination with architects and builders, and more personalized solutions for clients. At the same time, the human element remains essential. Great design will continue to be defined by judgment, experience, and the ability to create spaces that feel meaningful, livable, and timeless. AI is becoming a powerful tool in the background, helping elevate both efficiency and creativity while raising the overall standard of design.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future.:
Design is also moving toward a more intentional way of living, where homes support both physical well-being and mental clarity. The rise of the Well Home and a broader focus on health and wellness are shaping spaces that prioritize natural light, clean air, restorative materials, and areas dedicated to movement, recovery, and quiet retreat. At the same time, aesthetics are shifting toward Organic Modern design, grounded in natural textures, warm minimalism, and a strong connection to nature. Simplicity and restraint are becoming defining principles, with fewer but better materials, thoughtful details, and spaces that feel calm, purposeful, and enduring. Together, these themes reflect a desire for homes that not only look beautiful, but also function as places of restoration, balance, and long-term livability.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?:
My advice to other professionals in the industry is to design with integrity to your own convictions and point of view rather than chasing trends. Clients come to us for clarity, leadership, and confidence, not to replicate what is popular in the moment. Trends will always change, but a designer’s values, training, and experience are what create work that stands the test of time. Stay curious, continue learning, and refine your craft, but trust your instincts and the standards you have developed over years of practice. When you design from a place of authenticity and discipline, your work will feel more meaningful, more enduring, and ultimately more respected within the industry.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?:
The Design Et Al awards are more than recognition, they are a meaningful gathering of top international talent and a rare opportunity to learn from designers working at the highest level around the world. Being in that environment exposes you to new ideas, different cultural perspectives, and innovative approaches to materials, craftsmanship, and problem solving. It is both humbling and energizing to see the depth of creativity across global markets, and it reinforces the importance of continually refining our own work. Events like Design Et Al create a space where collaboration, inspiration, and professional growth naturally happen, raising the standard of design for all of us in the industry.

What projects are you currently working on?:
We are currently working on a collection of custom homes primarily located in mountain vacation destinations across the United States, including Park City, Utah; West Virginia; Flagstaff, Arizona; Driggs, Idaho; and Colorado, along with select projects in Texas. Many of these homes serve as second residences or legacy properties for families who value both durability and elevated design in rugged environments. Each project reflects the unique character of its region while maintaining our commitment to thoughtful planning, detailed coordination, and livable luxury tailored to the way our clients gather, relax, and enjoy their homes year round.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?:
My favorite project to work on was the Cinch Way project we submitted. The rugged setting made it especially meaningful, as it gave us the opportunity to design a home that truly felt like a cabin tucked away in the mountains while still delivering a high level of comfort and refinement through the furnishings. What made the project even more special was the clients’ eclectic collection of pieces gathered from their travels around the world. Incorporating those meaningful items into the design added layers of personality and storytelling, allowing the home to feel both adventurous and deeply personal, while still grounded in the warmth and authenticity of its mountain surroundings.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?:
One of the most challenging projects of my career was the Scottish Castle, a home that required years of thoughtful design and meticulous construction to bring to life. The complexity of the architecture demanded an extraordinary level of precision, from intricate rotundas and curved cabinetry to arched ceilings and a dramatic freestanding circular staircase that became a defining focal point of the home. Timber framing added another layer of coordination, requiring close collaboration with skilled craftsmen to ensure structural integrity and architectural authenticity. Every finish, furnishing, and detail was fully custom and carefully curated, including rare materials and antiques selected to honor the character of a true European estate. It was a demanding project in every sense, but also deeply rewarding, as it pushed our team’s creativity, technical expertise, and commitment to craftsmanship to the highest level.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?:
The artisans and tradespeople we partner with are truly the backbone of our work and essential to bringing our designs to life. We rely on incredibly talented craftsmen who can take what we draw and translate it into one of a kind pieces, from custom furniture and cabinetry to bespoke light fixtures and specialty finishes. When clients want every element of their home to tell a story and feel uniquely theirs, it requires a level of skill and dedication that only experienced makers can provide. Their precision, creativity, and pride in their craft allow us to deliver spaces that are not only beautiful, but deeply personal and thoughtfully executed.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?:
Over the next 12 months, our goal is to continue pushing ourselves to be the very best at our craft and to deliver exceptional results to the wonderful clientele who place their trust in us. We are committed to refining our processes, elevating the level of detail in our work, and maintaining the high standards that define our firm. We also hope to strengthen our partnerships across the industry by aligning with discerning architects and builders who share our commitment to excellence, collaboration, and thoughtful execution. By surrounding ourselves with professionals who hold the same values, we can continue to create homes that are not only beautiful, but enduring and deeply considered.

Your most treasured possession?:
My most treasured possessions are the paintings created by my daughter, who is studying classical art in New York City at the Grand Central Atelier. Not only are her works beautiful, they carry deep meaning for me because they represent years of dedication, discipline, and growth on her part, along with the encouragement and support I have given her along the way. Each piece reflects her commitment to mastering her craft, and for me, they serve as daily reminders of perseverance, creativity, and the joy of seeing someone you love pursue excellence with purpose.

Your favourite holiday destination?:
My favorite destination is Sintra, Portugal, a place our family returns to when we want to slow down, reconnect, and be inspired. It offers a rare combination of experiences, from studying the beauty of Moorish architecture and visiting remarkable art museums to painting tiles and landscapes and sketching the intricate details of historic buildings. One of my favorite rituals is walking from the sea through quaint villages and into the forest, taking in the changing scenery along the way. In Sintra, you truly get the ocean, a rich European cultural experience, and the serenity of nature all in one setting, which makes it both restorative and creatively energizing.

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?:
My favorite way to spend an afternoon is hiking in the mountains, enjoying the quiet, the fresh air, and the perspective that comes from being surrounded by nature.

If you weren’t in this sector, what would your alternative profession be?:
I can’t imagine being anything else.
