Tell us a little about the company background:
Polar Yacht Design (PYD) is a boutique studio based in Mallorca that specializes in both exterior and interior yacht design. Founded a year ago, the studio was born as a result of my extensive background in the nautical industry—a journey that began with a deep-rooted passion for the sea and a fascination with the artistry of shipbuilding. This curiosity, paired with a life spent sailing, compelled me to dive into the technical and aesthetic development of high-end vessels.

Today, the studio is driven by a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the desire to create unique experiences on the water, blending form and function to craft yachts that are as beautiful as they are performant. Each project is a reflection of my dedication to the craft and my belief that the ocean deserves designs that are both timeless and forward-thinking.

How does your company approach each project from concept to completion?:
At Polar Yacht Design, we recognize that every project is unique, requiring a bespoke methodology tailored to the specific needs of the client. Our process begins by identifying these core requirements and translating them into a curated narrative of references and research. This foundation leads into the creative conceptual phase, where we utilize agile design tools—such as rapid sketching and evocative moodboards—to bring ideas and solutions to life quickly and effectively.

Once the concept is established, we transition into the detailed design stage. Here, we deep-dive into technical specifications through a 360-degree collaborative approach, engaging with key stakeholders, including specialist engineers and fellow designers. We believe that clear objectives, a solid structure, and seamless communication are the pillars of a successful build. By maintaining a holistic vision that encompasses both the initial aesthetic and the final production reality, we ensure that every design is as functional in its engineering as it is striking in its form. Our commitment extends through every phase, offering continuous project management and support to our clients until the final delivery.

Where inspires your company in this sector?:
While we ensure our vessels are highly functional and aligned with contemporary aesthetics, we believe true innovation occurs when inspiration transcends the industry itself. For Polar Yacht Design, our inspiration can be found as far from the sea as one can imagine.

In our latest project, APU, we moved away from traditional maritime silhouettes to embrace the verticality and imposing mass of the Andean peaks. By translating these terrestrial forms into a monolithic naval architecture, we have created a vessel that feels like a permanent sanctuary on the ever-changing horizon—a design that commands respect through its structural purity rather than following fleeting trends.

In what direction do you feel that your projects are moving towards in a general sense?:
Our studio’s journey began with sailing yachts, and our current trajectory is moving toward motor yacht projects as a way to cross-pollinate design intelligence. We believe that to truly push the boundaries of innovation in the sailing world, it is essential to explore the bold architectural solutions and ‘forward-thinking’ comfort currently being developed in the motor yacht sector.

In a general sense, our projects are moving toward a synthesis of these two worlds: capturing the unmatched, pure sailing experience and merging it with the sophisticated space-planning and avant-garde aesthetics of modern motor yachts. Our goal is to evolve the sailing typology, ensuring that the next generation of vessels offers not just the most sustainable way to travel, but the most sophisticated architectural sanctuary on the water.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching projects in the future.:
Innovative Inspirations: Transcending the traditional boundaries of the nautical sector to find “soul” in unexpected places. Whether inspired by monumental land-based architecture or a completely different cultural or natural phenomenon, we believe the next generation of yachts must be born from a unique narrative that defies industry clichés.

The “Sanctuary” Concept: Prioritizing the emotional experience of the owner by treating the vessel as a private retreat.

Cross-Typology Innovation: Harmonizing the unmatched, sustainable experience of sailing with the sophisticated space-planning and avant-garde comfort typically found in the motor yacht sector. We aim to evolve the sailing typology by integrating the architectural intelligence and livability of larger motor vessels.

Technological Integration and Onboard Experience: Implementing cutting-edge propulsion technologies—such as methanol-reforming or hydrogen-ready systems—while simultaneously advancing the digital and sensory experience on board. The goal is to ensure that “green-tech” works silently to enhance, rather than compromise, the luxury and fluidity of life at sea.

Digital Workflow and Collaborative Efficiency: Embracing advanced digital solutions to streamline the transition from design to production. This includes leveraging high-fidelity visualization software and integrated project-control platforms to ensure seamless communication between all stakeholders—from engineers to shipyards. By optimizing these digital workflows, we guarantee higher precision in engineering and a more transparent, efficient development process for our clients.

If your company could offer one piece of advice when it comes to projects, what would it be?:
Yacht projects are marathons of complexity, involving thousands of individuals and dozens of specialized companies over several years. My advice is simple: throughout this immense collaborative challenge, never lose sight of the original intent. It is easy for a design to become diluted during the long development process; therefore, maintaining a disciplined focus on the initial concept and the client’s core needs is vital. A successful project isn’t just one that gets finished—it is one that remains true to its soul from the first sketch to the final launch.

How important are The International Yacht & Aviation Awards?:
The International Yacht & Aviation Awards serve as a prestigious global platform for visibility and recognition, showcasing the work of both established icons and emerging talents within the design industry. For us, these awards are far more than a ceremony; they are a vital benchmark and a source of inspiration. They offer a unique window into the current state of the sector while providing a clear vision of the future. Being part of this selection allows us to engage in a high-level dialogue about where design is headed, ensuring that our work remains at the forefront of maritime innovation.

What projects are you currently working on?:
We are currently involved in the bespoke customization of the exterior of an 80-foot sailing yacht, alongside the conceptual development of a 100-foot sailing vessel. Additionally, we are moving a major concept developed last year into its next phase of technical development. These projects allow us to apply our design philosophy across different scales, focusing on the refinement of both aesthetics and functional performance.

What was one of your company’s key projects to work on and why?:
Project APU stands as our most significant work to date for several reasons. Beyond the inherent challenges of its scale—which demanded a meticulous approach to spatial optimization and technical detail—it is a deeply personal project. APU represents my own cultural heritage as a designer, serving as a bridge between two radically different worlds: the monumental verticality of the mountains and the vast fluidity of the sea.

It is a study in contrasts, merging exuberant luxury with the raw, uncompromising power of nature. By translating the ‘monolithic’ spirit of the Andes into a naval silhouette, we created a vessel that isn’t just a boat, but a conceptual sanctuary that honors where I come from while looking toward the future of maritime architecture.
