Tell us a little about your background in design

Design has always been part of my life. Growing up surrounded by creativity, craftsmanship and a family business instilled in me a deep appreciation for thoughtful design and the way beautifully considered spaces can enrich everyday living.

My studies in Art History at The University of Western Australia further shaped my creative perspective, inspiring a love of timeless design, architecture and the stories interiors can tell. While my family’s legacy in design has been an invaluable influence—my father, Greg Sherwood, founded Sherwood Furniture in 1982, creating bespoke furniture and sculptural pieces for clients around the world, and my mother, Rose Sherwood, established Sherwood Design in 2003—it has also encouraged me to develop my own distinctive approach.

Today, I have the privilege of leading both Sherwood Design and Sherwood Furniture, continuing that legacy while bringing my own vision to each project. My focus is on creating refined, highly personal homes that feel elegant, enduring and deeply connected to the people who live in them.

How would you describe your personal design style?

My signature style blends a contemporary aesthetic with elements that honour the past.

Our Sherwood Design transitional aesthetic seamlessly blends traditional and contemporary elements, enriched by carefully selected materials, colours, and textures, ensuring our spaces are not only visually captivating but conceptually enriching.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

We create spaces that harmoniously blend elements of contemporary and traditional design to create a timeless aesthetic driven by an ethos of ‘Liveable Luxe’. We weave together the personal aesthetics of our clients into the fabric of our designs, resulting in holistic creations that exude sophistication and refinement.

Through carefully considered design, we create bespoke environments that go beyond aesthetics, ensuring a personalised and unique space for each client. Our approach involves a meticulous understanding of individual preferences, lifestyle, and functional needs, allowing us to craft spaces that truly resonate with our client’s identity and enhance your daily experiences.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

We are seeing a return to a classicism that stirs the soul, balanced with modern features and luxurious design considerations.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future.

Our guiding rules at Sherwood Design are:

  • Look to the past first
  • Establish a timeless, neutral foundation
  • Incorporate thoughtfully chosen statement pieces
  • Ensure the design reflects and supports our clients’ lifestyle
  • Craft unique, tailored pieces that celebrate each client’s individuality

What projects are you currently working on?

Our current focus is a magnificent renovation and rebuild on the iconic Swan River. We have a full scope, ensuring luxury inside and out with a deep consideration of the lifestyle that comes with living by the water.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?

Both projects we have submitted for consideration genuinely captured my heart. Draper is softly layered and quietly indulgent, designed as a hotel-luxe retreat balancing sculptural forms, blush tones and brushed brass detailing. Anchored in subtle Art Deco references, the design draws on curvature, proportion, and materiality to create a sense of calm restraint.

Jacques layers classical influence into a contemporary home, shaping an interior defined by contrast, materiality, and quiet luxury. A palette of soft neutrals and sculptural forms sits alongside bold, expressive artwork — grounding the spaces and bringing a distinct sense of character.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing? E.g. Lighting companies, furniture companies

We couldn’t create the truly one-of-a-kind projects we do without the masterpieces uniquely hand crafted in our Sherwood Furniture workshop. From large scale joinery to bespoke furniture, it is a key feature of our service that sets us apart.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

I am forever yearning to find the balance between our busy projects, invaluable family time and rejuvenating holidays.

Your most treasured possession?

Of course it has to be my precious daughter Ava – nothing else could come close.

Your favourite holiday destination?

Easy, the south west of Western Australia – the forests, beaches and crisp air are all I need to feel refreshed.

Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar?

Hotel: The Locke Hotel in Kensington, London
Restaurant: Madeleine, next door to our showroom on Beaufort St.
Bar: The Post inside The State Building in Perth City

Your favourite book, film & song?

Book: The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy
Film: The Grand Budapest Hotel
Song: Shine a Light by The Rolling Stones

Your favourite food and drink?

Food: Dark chocolate – always
Drink: A chilled rosé by the ocean

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?

Spending time with my family will always come first. Beyond that, the ocean is where I feel most at home. If I’m not at work or with family, you’ll usually find me sneaking in a surf or simply sitting by the water, soaking up the calm and resetting for whatever comes next.

If you weren’t in this sector, what would your alternative profession be?

Probably an Art Historian. I’ve always been fascinated by the stories behind art, architecture and the cultures that shaped them, so I’d happily spend my days researching, writing and sharing that passion with others.
