Rosewood Munich is a landmark restoration that sensitively transforms the former Bavarian State Bank headquarters and the adjacent Palais Neuhaus-Preysing into an ultra luxury hotel rooted in Munich’s architectural and cultural identity. Hilmer Sattler Architekten successfully united two distinct historic buildings, preserving their individual character while creating a seamless guest journey that connects heritage with contemporary hospitality.

The project celebrates the property’s Baroque and Rococo architecture through the careful restoration of its ornate façade, grand staircase, vaulted ceilings, historic frescoes, decorative plasterwork, stone staircases and ballroom. Rather than treating these historic elements as static features, the design integrates them into elegant, residential interiors that feel warm, refined and inviting. Natural tones, bespoke furnishings, marble, wood panelling, leather, velvet and carefully considered lighting create a sophisticated atmosphere that complements the architecture while ensuring contemporary comfort.

The arrival sequence defines the experience, with guests entering through the monumental portico before ascending the grand staircase beneath preserved decorative detailing. This space has evolved into the Staircase Gallery, transforming a significant architectural feature into a living cultural destination where contemporary artworks are experienced from changing viewpoints. Together with Bar Montez and its striking stained glass installation by Mayer’sche Hofkunstanstalt, these spaces demonstrate a commitment to craftsmanship, artistry and cultural exchange.

Exceptional restoration expertise was required throughout the project, alongside specialist artisan skills including façade restoration, fresco conservation, bespoke joinery, marble work, specialist lighting and custom furnishings. Through sensitive adaptive reuse and meticulous attention to detail, Rosewood Munich preserves Munich’s architectural heritage while creating a contemporary cultural destination that feels deeply connected to the city and welcoming to an international audience.
