TOKIHI Retreat Villa reflects Sense of Resort Inc.’s approach to creating hospitality environments that place experience, atmosphere and connection to nature at the centre of the design. Located in the Mt. Fuji area of Japan, the private hotel residence was conceived as a refined retreat where guests can enjoy the comfort of a private home alongside the quality and elegance of a luxury hospitality destination. Every element contributes to a calm residential character while offering a memorable sense of escape.

The practice created a seamless relationship between architecture, interiors, outdoor living and landscape, ensuring these elements work together as one continuous environment rather than as separate spaces. Living and dining areas extend naturally onto the terrace and garden, encouraging guests to move effortlessly between interior comfort and the surrounding landscape. The garden is treated as an essential part of the experience, strengthening the connection with the natural setting.

Sense of Resort Inc. adopted a Japandi aesthetic that combines Japanese restraint and wabi-sabi with contemporary comfort. Natural textures, quiet tones, asymmetry, carefully selected furniture, soft furnishings and planting create an atmosphere that feels warm, personal and deeply connected to place. Rather than relying on excessive decoration, the design focuses on proportion, materiality, light, shadow and carefully framed views.

The project demonstrates the practice’s ability to coordinate architecture, construction, landscape design, interior styling, furniture selection and outdoor living into a cohesive whole. By responding sensitively to the landscape, climate and cultural character of the Mt. Fuji region, Sense of Resort Inc. has created a hospitality retreat that reflects Japanese seasonality, simplicity and a refined connection between people and nature.
