Koshu Club

The architect and interior design firm Smith Hanes Studio conceived an intimate Japanese supper club inspired by the elegance and dynamic spirit of Japan’s Shōwa era. The project is designed to feel transportive, atmospheric, and inherently social, reinterpreting traditional Japanese hospitality through a contemporary lens that balances warmth, restraint, and understated luxury. The result is an immersive dining environment grounded in connection, discovery, and emotional resonance.

Within the interior, Smith Hanes Studio layers rich wood tones, ambient lighting, tactile materials, and reflective surfaces to create depth and intimacy throughout the space. A glowing central bar serves as the compositional and social anchor of the restaurant, drawing guests inward while encouraging movement, interaction, and visual engagement. Rather than relying on excess, the design achieves impact through precision and cohesion, ensuring every detail contributes to a unified sensory experience.

Materiality, lighting, acoustics, and spatial organisation work in concert to produce a layered sense of discovery. Carefully controlled sightlines, low lighting levels, and warm textures establish a rhythm between openness and enclosure, allowing the atmosphere to unfold gradually. The restrained design approach avoids overt thematic expression, instead capturing the essence of a Japanese supper club through mood, proportion, and atmosphere.
