SmithErickson Designs Inc. has created a highly personalised family home that captures the character and permanence of an old-world residence while responding to the needs of a busy family with five boys. The clients envisioned a private retreat removed from the city, where the family could gather, entertain and eventually welcome their children back as they grew older and started families of their own. Although substantial in scale, the home was carefully shaped to feel comfortable, welcoming and never overly formal or precious.

The International Design & Architecture Awards 2027
SmithErickson Designs Inc. established a sense of history and craftsmanship through detailed millwork, traditional forms, natural stone, warm woods and rich, earthy tones. Unexpected touches of blue and more expressive finishes introduce personality, ensuring that the old-world influence remains distinctive rather than overly traditional. Throughout the home, beauty is balanced with a strong sense of belonging, creating spaces that are both considered and suited to everyday family life.
The kitchen captures the essence of the project, interpreting old-world character for modern family living. A sculptural plaster hood, richly veined stone and warm wood create a sense of history and craftsmanship, while the oversized island transforms the kitchen into a true gathering place for the family of seven. The approach reflects SmithErickson Designs Inc.’s focus on combining traditional character with practical spaces that support how the family lives.
The surrounding landscape also plays an important role in SmithErickson Designs Inc.’s design approach. Expansive windows frame views and bring the changing seasons into the home, while stone, warm woods and earthy hues create a natural dialogue between the interiors and their setting. The result is a private, retreat-like family home where timeless character, natural materials and thoughtful craftsmanship come together to create a warm and enduring sense of home.
