Snug Kitchens has completed a bespoke kitchen project that blends craftsmanship, calm family living and a sensitive nod to literary history. Designed within a home once owned by J.R.R. Tolkien, the kitchen was conceived as the social heart of the house while quietly honouring its past. The clients were keen to avoid overt references, instead asking Snug Kitchens to embed subtle cues through materiality, texture and a sense of story that would feel natural rather than themed.

The International Design & Architecture Awards 2026
Snug Kitchens responded with a warm and grounded design centred on an earthy, tactile palette. Bespoke solid timber cabinetry introduces authenticity and depth, creating an immediate sense of permanence and craft. This is paired with green veined stone worktops and splashbacks that act as a natural focal point, lending the space a sculptural quality that feels both dramatic and timeless. Fluted glass detailing adds softness and lightness, enhancing the overall sense of calm.
Functionality was fundamental to the design. The clients lead active lives and share their home with a lively puppy, so Snug Kitchens selected robust materials that would age gracefully. As enthusiastic sourdough bakers, the clients also required generous preparation space, intuitive zoning and temperature stable surfaces, all of which were carefully integrated into the layout. Natural light was maximised to highlight architectural features and reinforce the kitchen’s tranquil atmosphere.
Storage planning was approached with meticulous care. Every utensil, appliance and ingredient was considered and given a dedicated place, ensuring the kitchen remains organised and uncluttered. The result is a contemporary yet enduring kitchen that balances atmosphere and function, where thoughtful craftsmanship and subtle narrative combine to create a space that feels deeply personal and effortlessly liveable.
