The Natatorium

Shortlisted: Wellness - Residential Spa/Pool

The International Design & Architecture Awards 2026

Doreve Nicholaeff Architecture approached this natatorium as a carefully considered extension of the existing historic residence, creating a year-round retreat that feels naturally connected to both the home and its landscape. Having previously renovated the main house under a former owner, the practice brought a detailed understanding of the property’s architectural character, allowing the new addition to complement the original residence while meeting the homeowner’s vision for a dedicated space for swimming, exercise and relaxation.

The practice responded to the challenge of accommodating a substantial 58 by 16 foot indoor pool by connecting the natatorium to the home’s lower level and embedding the building into the natural terrain. This approach allowed the addition to sit comfortably within the landscape while forming a sheltered courtyard that strengthens the relationship between the architecture and its surroundings. A matching brick material palette and a lower roofline reinforce the hierarchy of the historic residence, ensuring the new structure remains sympathetic to its context.

To manage the scale of the building, Doreve Nicholaeff Architecture articulated its length through a series of repeated gables that echo the proportions and rhythm of the existing home. The vaulted interior is defined by exposed structural steel trusses clad in warm wood, creating a striking ceiling that recalls the folded precision of origami while introducing rhythm and visual interest throughout the space. Clerestory windows, expansive glazing and NanaWall doors maximise natural light and establish a seamless connection to the gardens and backyard.

The success of the project lies in its ability to balance wellness, recreation and architectural continuity. Supporting beams clad in walnut veneer by a craftsman and carefully executed joinery that remains true to the intended geometry demonstrate the level of specialist craftsmanship involved. The result is a refined architectural destination that feels fully integrated with the historic home and its wider environment.
