Shortlisted: Spa / Spa Hotel

The International Hotel & Property Awards 2026

TV3 Architects approached the spa extension with a clear commitment to simplicity, functionality and a deep connection to the surrounding landscape. Set within a tranquil, forest-like environment on one of the oldest Cape Dutch farms in the Franschhoek Valley, dating back to 1692, the project expands the existing wellness offering through the introduction of a new indoor pool, an extended outdoor pool, additional changing facilities, a double hammam and a rasul.

The architectural response is expressed through two restrained pavilion structures connected by an outdoor waterway. Expansive glazing and a glazed roof strengthen the relationship between the interior spaces and the landscape, framing uninterrupted views towards the north-western slopes of Simonsberg mountain and the surrounding vineyards. Drawing inspiration from the simplicity of the Cape Dutch vernacular, TV3 Architects interpreted these influences through a contemporary architectural language defined by careful proportion, material honesty and restraint.

A key aspect of the project is the outdoor courtyard positioned between the pool houses. Conceived as a contemplative threshold, it creates opportunities for guests to gather, rest and reconnect with the landscape between treatments. Throughout the spa, movement is carefully choreographed through bamboo groves and winding timber walkways, creating a sequence of discovery, anticipation and sensory immersion.

The hammam and rasul provide contrasting yet complementary experiences. The double-volume hammam is crafted entirely from heated white Carrara marble beneath a domed ceiling clad in Aegean blue mosaic tiles, while the rasul is enveloped in iridescent green and aquamarine mosaics that soften the space through fluid, uninterrupted forms. Specialist artisans from Italy were engaged to execute the intricate mosaic installations, ensuring exceptional craftsmanship throughout. The result is a refined yet grounded wellness destination that sits comfortably within its historic farm setting.
