Product Name: Blue Straw Marquetry Cabinet

Gosling’s brief was to design a signature blue straw marquetry collection for the dining room, the cabinet is custom fitted to accommodate the crockery and cutlery. The intricate detailing requires highly skilled craftsmanship. Straw marquetry, was first used by the early twentieth century, French designer, Jean-Michel Frank. The particular straw Gosling uses today is grown in the South of France, worked into panels in Normandy and then sent to Gosling’s cabinetmakers in Yorkshire.

The brief stated a requirement to make a fluid transition from the nearby white carbon fibre, exterior deck furniture to the interior space. The highly polished, white lacquer echoes the white carbon fibre and the depth of the blue straw marquetry the surrounding seascape. The bronze detailing is made in brass and hand patinated to a bronze patina. The internals and shelves are a soft-limed oak finish.

The straw marquetry detailing grew out of the Greek key pattern design, with intricate interlocking square panels of straw marquetry seamlessly jointed together to form a beautiful vibrant pattern. The frequent change of direction of the straw fibres refract the light, throwing it from the various boundaries and creating a dramatic visual effect, which alters as you move. The stripped back design has no handles, operating on push catches. The minimalism of the design creates a stunning, visual statement piece with an inimitable aesthetic. Together with the other pieces of the Gosling collection, the blue straw marquetry echoes the azure colour of the sea, which combined with the brilliant white, provides the perfect superyacht signature pieces.
