Sofitel Shanghai North Bund

Shortlisted: Bar Club Lounge Award

The International Hotel & Property Awards 2025

Conceived as a landmark urban renewal project under the prestigious Accor brand, the hotel in Shanghai’s historic North Bund district exemplifies a seamless integration of cultural heritage and contemporary French elegance. Tasked with honouring the area’s rich legacy as a cultural crossroads, the design draws inspiration from the life and music of a renowned Shanghai musician – embedding a living narrative that bridges East and West.

The architecture expresses rhythm and movement through fluid exterior curves and tiered forms, softened by vertical greenery that contrasts with the modern glass façade. This spatial composition creates a welcoming sense of warmth and privacy within the bustling urban context. At the entrance, an interactive musical score installation invites guest participation, merging art, technology, and cultural storytelling into an immersive hospitality experience.

Inside, the design employs a refined palette of black and white marble, soft wood, and delicate stone, accentuated by subtle lighting to evoke timeless sophistication. Public spaces, including lounges and dining venues, reflect a “new classical fusion” approach—blending French architectural grace with motifs drawn from Shanghai’s “Haipai” heritage, such as Art Deco influences and Shikumen textures.

The hotel’s transformation of a former industrial and cultural precinct into a modern sanctuary demonstrates architectural ingenuity and cultural sensitivity. This reinterpretation of tradition through a contemporary lens ensures that each guest encounter is both meaningful and elegant. From the harmonious materiality to curated art installations, the property stands as a testament to Sofitel’s vision of refined living—offering a soulful hospitality experience that resonates with identity, artistry, and emotional depth.
