All Nippon Airways (ANA) – New Business Class Seat – THE Room FX

Acumen Design Associates has unveiled THE Room FX, a next-generation Business Class seat created for All Nippon Airways’ Boeing 787 fleet. Building on the remarkable success of the original THE Room, designed by Acumen in 2019 for ANA’s Boeing 777s, the new product translates the airline’s distinctive design DNA into a more space challenged environment without compromising comfort, elegance, or efficiency.

ANA’s brief demanded the same expansive, residential feel that made the original seat a benchmark in the industry, but adapted for the narrower 787 cabin. This required Acumen to rethink the concept entirely, developing a fresh architectural approach and an all-new seat mechanism while retaining the spirit and functionality of THE Room. The result is a refined, highly efficient suite with enhanced spaciousness and a noticeably lighter footprint.

At the heart of the innovation is a unique sofa-like seating arrangement paired with Acumen’s signature forward- and aft-facing layout. A newly developed single-motion mechanism, in which only the leg rest deploys to form the bed, enables both seat orientations to share a single structure. This eliminates the need for bulky shells, reducing weight, part count, failure points, and maintenance costs while returning valuable space to the passenger.

The interlocking curved backrests of the forward and aft-facing seats further optimise cabin geometry, while new in-line double doors replace the heavier pocket-door system used on the 777. The result is a suite that feels more open, intuitive, and residential, offering passengers a range of natural comfort positions with the ergonomic backrest always available for support.

Weight reduction was a key objective throughout the project. Through collaborative engineering and revised manufacturing methods, the new design achieves a 25 per cent reduction compared with the original 777 seat. Updated materials improve durability and sustainability across the product’s lifecycle.

Every element of THE Room FX has been reimagined around the passenger, embodying the “Future Experience” from which it takes its name. With seamless transitions between seating and sleeping, class leading bed space, and a considered, home-inspired aesthetic, Acumen and ANA have created a Business Class product that elevates comfort while redefining efficiency for the modern widebody cabin.
