The Fortingall

Annabelle Holland Design has breathed new life into The Fortingall, a once run-down Highland hotel now transformed into a luxurious boutique destination rich in character and heritage. Situated at the foot of Glen Lyon in Perthshire, often described as Scotland’s most beautiful glen, The Fortingall has been reimagined as a warm and authentic retreat, perfectly tailored for both adventurous country guests and those seeking tranquillity.

Originally built in 1891 by Arts & Crafts architect James Maclaren, the hotel was commissioned by Sir Donald Currie and is considered one of the great treasures of British Victorian rural architecture. Annabelle Holland Design embraced this history while delivering a complete refurbishment of the bedrooms, bathrooms, restaurant, drawing room, and the adjoining pub, The Ewe.

The brief was to create a modern country hotel that remained true to its Scottish roots. Handmade British furniture, antiques, and contemporary accessories are layered with luxurious wallpapers, woollen fabrics, tweed valances, and velvet headboards to create depth and warmth throughout. Rather than relying heavily on tartan, the design takes a subtle, respectful approach to its setting, allowing the interiors to harmonise quietly with the surrounding landscape.

In the restaurant, a bespoke bar has been added as a central feature, with an 18th-century oil painting of Bonnie Prince Charlie at its heart. Guests can enjoy a signature ‘Cheeky Charlie’ cocktail before retiring to the drawing room for a whisky by the fire.

Every detail by Annabelle Holland Design serves the dual purpose of comfort and storytelling, from repositioned baths framing sweeping glen views to the thoughtful integration of estate-sourced menus. This design not only honours tradition but elevates it, re-establishing The Fortingall as a true gem of Highland hospitality.
