HOUSE IN TATEYAMA BY RON DESIGN

Having commissioned an architect to create the external shell, the client asked interior designer, Ryoko Ogoshi to create a sophisticated, warm, modern interior to respond to the dramatic setting of the house. Ryoko worked with the clients and the architect from the earliest stages of the design and together they modified the interior architecture the architect had initially proposed to make the interior spaces respond to the client’s lifestyle and the exterior views.

The landscape and stunning views of the ocean were the inspiration for the interior design concept, nature and appreciating our beautiful planet have become more important to us all. The clients wanted a weekend home where they could indulge in this love of nature.

REPOS EN GRANDEUR BY IQI CONCEPT

The main feature of this modern luxury home is, the feature wall panelling that gels the entire mood of the house that the designer and client are aiming to achieve. The different height levels of each space automatically create an invisible wall in the common area. In the middle of the section of the house, the living room has a slightly higher floor space. IQI Concept have transformed the double volume area to welcome friends.

There is one corner of the house which has a much lower spatial height than the rest, defining a more cosy ambiance, sat on a slightly elevated deck. This is where a chill-out area was designed and created, a slight contrast from the “modern luxury” theme with a low lounge sofa and a TV.

DESIGNER IN PROFILE: RYOKO OGOSHI DIRECTOR OF RON DESIGN

Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc) After graduating from university, I worked as an architect at a major construction company. Taking a break from architecture to spend time with my family, I then launched Ron Design in 2014. To compliment my architecture qualification, I studied interior design at The Interior Design School in London. Since then, I have also earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from a graduate school specializing in Japanese wooden architecture. The combination of experience and skill as both architect and interior designer is unusual in Japan and makes my studio unique.
How would you describe your personal design style?
We create spaces that harmonise with the needs and desires of our clients. Our comfortable and relaxed interiors are balanced with dramatic and dynamic architectural elements. My architectural experience in space planning, detail and facility design, and project management mean that the practical and functional aspects of our designs fully support the relaxed atmosphere and harmony that our clients desire.
Where does your design inspiration come from?
I always feel the little emotions and joys of everyday life – sunlight on the ocean, shadows created by trees – I am inspired by the power and beauty of our wonderful planet Earth. The location and site of the project inspire material, texture, and colour choices, along with my appreciation of traditional Japanese wooden architecture.  The skills and knowledge of local artisans and artists add layers of redefined tradition to my work.
