Bishop Design LLC conceived MIKA as a sophisticated Mediterranean-inspired dining destination that captures the warmth, texture and authenticity of coastal Europe within a refined contemporary setting. Located in Coral Gables, the project was designed to feel timeless and organic, balancing old-world character with modern elegance. The design responds to the client’s vision of creating a venue that feels welcoming, immersive and deeply connected to its surroundings while supporting the culinary artistry of Michelin-starred chef Michael White.

Spanning 8,195 square feet and accommodating 170 guests, the design carefully maintains intimacy across a generous footprint. Bishop Design LLC created a series of natural transitions between the main dining room, lounge, private dining space and outdoor terrace, ensuring each area feels distinct yet connected. A central social bar anchors the restaurant, functioning as a vibrant focal point. Clad in natural stone with a custom brass foot rail and softly illuminated shelving, it establishes a welcoming hub for social interaction and engagement.

Materiality formed the foundation of the design concept. Distressed wood, hand-laid terracotta tiles, chukum-style wall finishes and bespoke plasterwork were selected for their honesty, texture and ability to age gracefully. Layers of burnished metal, velvet and leather introduce refinement while preserving a sense of authenticity. Inspired by Mediterranean heritage, weathered textures and sun-baked tones, Bishop Design LLC developed an interior language that feels both grounded and enduring.

Lighting and atmosphere were carefully calibrated to evolve throughout the day, from bright daytime settings to intimate evening dining. Custom fixtures and discreet architectural lighting highlight material textures and spatial transitions, while layered ceiling treatments and textured surfaces enhance acoustics. The result is a hospitality destination that enriches Coral Gables through craftsmanship, cultural depth and thoughtful design.
