Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)

With a degree in visual arts and an emphasis on printmaking, my career began in art education before pivoting into the world of interiors. Today, I’m the founder and principal designer of Blueberry Jones Design, where I’ve established a reputation for pushing creative boundaries in residential design that’s bold, playful, and inviting. My background in art deeply influences my unapologetic use of colour, pattern, and textiles, all of which distinguish a Blueberry Jones project. As a designer, my ethos is simple: great design is never boring, and no space is complete without a little mystery. This results in layered and liveable spaces that my clients love to call home.

How would you describe your personal design style?

Eclectic, bold, and perfectly unexpected. I love to design playful homes that are best described as whimsical yet refined.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

Period dramas, traveling, fashion, and clients.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

Designers are taking a more daring approach to interior design, viewing homes as a means for creative expression. Whether under the label of maximalism or dopamine décor, we’re entering an era where designers fearlessly push boundaries again, balancing patterns, colours, and textures in artful ways. This movement is all about breaking traditionally held rules, and it’s an exciting time to be in the industry.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2023 and beyond.

  1. Outdoor illusions – Finding ways to connect the outdoors to the interior through architectural elements, colors, and other design elements.
  2. Wellness – Creating an atmosphere that supports relaxation and promotes well-being.
  3. Smart storage – Utilizing creative solutions to hide and tuck away everyday clutter when not in use.
  4. Custom all the way – Pushing creative boundaries and adding a refined reflection of the client’s personality to the design.
  5. Stay inspired – Continuously travel and learn to keep growing and changing, ensuring that your design approach remains fresh and innovative.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?

Design should always involve a degree of risk-taking. When in doubt, choose the bolder, riskier option, and you’ll never regret it.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?

The International Design & Architecture Awards have immense significance as they symbolize excellence and innovation in our industry. By recognizing outstanding projects and talents from around the world, they raise standards and motivate future generations of designers and architects to push the limits of creativity.

What projects are you currently working on?

Our current projects primarily involve new construction homes with full-service furnishings.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?

My favourite project to date is ‘Skyline Summit’ because it embodies the Blueberry Jones Design philosophy. The creative direction was ‘Palm Springs meets Texas Hill Country,’ allowing us to showcase our maximalist style through the use of bold patterns and colours in each room, which, in turn, gave us the opportunity to tell an incredible story.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?

The projects I find most challenging are the ones where I am given too many restraints. It becomes difficult to unleash the project’s full potential when I am asked to colour within the lines. However, I still like to push my clients a little bit outside of their comfort zone by incorporating at least one controversial element. I’ve found it’s the secret sauce to great design.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?

My trusted network of vendors, artisans, and SketchUp.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

My goal is to continue to expand Blueberry Jones Design while embracing new projects that bring fresh challenges and risks. Continuing to stretch myself creatively is always where growth happens.

Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself and your daily inspirations:

If you weren’t a designer, what would you be?
I’d be in a like-minded creative career, probably in the fashion or beauty industry.
