Brooke Aitken Design has reimagined a 1920s heritage-listed apartment overlooking Sydney Harbour into a bold and expressive residence that seamlessly balances historical character with contemporary flair. Named Harbour Deco, the project reflects the client’s fearless sense of style and individuality, transforming a compact top-floor apartment into a richly layered and deeply personal home.

Drawing inspiration from the vibrant visual language of Missoni and Christian Lacroix, Brooke Aitken Design responded to a brief that celebrated colour, texture, and individuality. At the heart of the redesign lies the kitchen, painted in Dulux Passionate Blue and grounded by a dramatic black-and-white geometric floor. This space nods to the streamlined luxury of P&O liners, merging Art Deco elegance with modern functionality. The removal of the existing pantry allowed for the creation of a custom banquet dining area, brought to life with a bespoke wallpaper designed in collaboration with Kingdom Home.

The interior architecture was refined through key spatial interventions, including the widening of original arches to improve flow and connectivity. Brooke Aitken Design maintained the apartment’s historic proportions while delivering a high-functioning layout that includes two full bathrooms, generous bedrooms, a hidden laundry, and fully integrated joinery.

Despite working within heritage constraints and access limitations, the studio embraced every challenge with a clear design intent. The result is a cohesive, functionally intelligent home that celebrates ornamentation, tactility, and spatial ingenuity. Harbour Deco rejects minimalism in favour of richness and expression, grounded in architectural clarity and historic respect. Brooke Aitken Design has created a timeless interior that feels both luxurious and liveable, offering a vibrant, modern interpretation of the apartment’s historic legacy.
