Craig & Company was commissioned to transform a 5,500-square-foot vintage condominium into a timeless, French-inspired residence, offering both elegance and livability for a family of dedicated Francophiles. Given full creative freedom by their clients, Craig & Company embarked on an exploration of 19th and 20th-century French design, meticulously integrating historic elements with modern functionality. The goal was to create a home that would not only meet the family’s exacting standards but also provide a haven they would eagerly return to after their travels.

The project draws heavily on French history, from the acquisition of notable antiques to the design of custom Louis XVI-inspired sconces and the installation of parquet de Sabouise flooring in the gallery. Millwork throughout the home was informed by measured drawings of the Petit Trianon, while the scullery and pantry were inspired by the Musée Nissim de Camondo, with similar influences reflected in the tile patterns of the bathrooms. Michele Costello’s dark leather wall panels, featuring patterns abstracted from 18th-century French books, lend an air of sophistication to the foyer.

The living room showcases verre églomisé panels by Jean Dupas, originally created in 1934 for the SS Normandie, illustrating a scene from the Odyssey. In spaces like the kitchen and breakfast room, where natural light is limited, a vibrant hand-painted Gracie wallpaper brings warmth through rich golds, ochres, and greens.

Throughout the home, antique and custom furnishings, carefully chosen colors, and historically inspired moldings contribute to the cohesive design. This residence, balancing tradition with modernity, stands as a refined yet vibrant reflection of its owners’ vision.
