design et al – 200th Issue

DESIGN ET AL CELEBRATES ITS 200TH ISSUE – 23rd SEPTEMBER 2022

Leading interior design publisher design et al will be celebrating their 200th issue in September 2022, at The International Design & Architecture Awards, London – an annual celebration of the world’s leading designers and architects.

“September is always a key month in the interior design sector”, Publisher Joanne Beedles commented. “We will be hosting The International Design & Architecture Awards at the end of Design Week as usual, however this year the event will be even more memorable and significant as we also reveal and celebrate the 200th issue at The Awards Ceremony. The 200th issue will be a true celebration, with tributes to the designers and architects who made those very first issues so incredible and have enabled us to grow over the past 16 years. We have morphed and grown as a business and have had the flexibility to do so, due for the most part to our complete commitment and support from the designers we work with.”

Launched in May 2006, design et al was from the outset a unique title, designed to bridge the gap between the trade and consumer market, with a strong forward-thinking approach to subscriptions which was emulated by many publishers over subsequent years. Today it remains one of the strongest subscription-based titles in the industry and aims to do more than just act as a publisher.

“The aim of design et al is very much to bring together a global design elite” Joanne continued, “there is little point in quoting distribution figures alone; in order to facilitate change and growth, we need to bring the world together, and in 2010 we launched The International Design & Architecture Awards to do just that. They are now one of the most respected Awards in the industry, attracting over a million individual verified voters since this time and covering all areas of elite design, from superyachts and private aviation to hotel and residential schemes. I am immensely proud to be part of this incredible global industry and to work as a publisher for that industry.”

Despite the global economic crisis of 2008, which saw many publishers and publications close their doors, while others move to digital-only and then disappear in many cases, design et al has always maintained its position as an ‘in-print title’, extending its remit after 2008 to include hardback annual design books – this was again extended in 2020. Their mission remains strong:  to lead, predict and recommend, they do not follow or replicate, nor do they mimic and in doing so the title keeps its annual commitment to support leading designers and architects via The International Design Awards with editorial and PR to the value of £7million per annum.

The 200th issue is open only to design et al Key customers, sponsors and designers shortlisted in The International Design Awards. “We have, since 2006, adopted consistent guidelines and an invitation/ application only policy to be included in any of our publications,” Joanne concluded. “A decade ago, a customer claimed we had, as a result of this, in publishing terms the best little black book in London. I would argue that today we probably have, in the interior design world, the best little black book on the planet.”
